The Uganda Embassy in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, hosted a colourful event at the Hilton Hotel to mark Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary, while showcasing the country’s vast tourism and investment opportunities to hundreds of guests, including diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Ugandan community in Ethiopia.The celebration featured cultural performances by the Crane Performers, as well as presentations from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), which highlighted the country’s appeal as a destination for business and leisure.Speaking at the event, Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and Ambassador to Ethiopia, reflected on Uganda’s journey from a turbulent past to becoming one of the most stable nations in the region. She praised the country’s progress under steady leadership and noted Uganda’s generosity in hosting over 1.6 million refugees from neighbouring nations — a gesture rooted in its own historical experiences with displacement.Ambassador Otengo also commended the strong relations between Uganda and Ethiopia, calling for more practical economic cooperation to benefit citizens of both countries. “It is not enough for Uganda and Ethiopia to enjoy good bilateral relations; this must translate into tangible economic activities that uplift our people,” she said.Ethiopia, with its booming population of over 120 million and advanced textile and leather industries, offers significant potential for trade and investment. Many Ethiopians are already investing in Uganda in sectors like real estate and commerce, while the two countries continue to explore collaboration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).The Chief Guest, Ambassador Zerehun Abebe, Director of African Affairs at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lauded Uganda’s leading role in promoting peace and stability in Africa. He emphasized the need for both countries to “tap into the glaring opportunities that can transform the lives of our people.”Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, Chief of Staff at the AU Commission Chairperson’s Cabinet, applauded Uganda’s unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism and its leadership in peace and security initiatives across the continent.Capt. Dr. James Kanagwa, Chairperson of the Ugandan Community in Ethiopia, commended the government’s efforts to engage the diaspora in national development. Addis Ababa is home to hundreds of Ugandans working in AU institutions and other international organizations.With four daily direct flights between Entebbe and Addis Ababa, business and tourism linkages between the two nations are on the rise.
