The march of technology -- and storage demands -- must be met.There are plenty of people who think that running a place like this is a "zero effort" (or close to it) sort of thing. Its not. The code base that runs here has been under more-or-less continual development since I replaced Blogger and then Serendipity with it back around the time of the financial crash in '08. It, in turn, built on several prior online forum implementations back to well before there was an Internet -- you know, dial-up modems into Z-80 powered TRS-80s? Yes, that far back (and that one was written in assembler!)The last "really big" change was to refactor a large part of the codebase so as to optimize both performance and RAM use; FastCGI more-or-less forced that if I wanted to avoid bogons in operating system memory allocation, which in a "highly variable demand" context for a long-running.......(Click link to read more)
