‘It could still turn’ – GM who gave away Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones isn’t safe with New York Giants

Wait 5 sec.

New York fired Brian Daboll because the Giants kept painfully losing close games. But there was a second level to the news that one of the NFL‘s oldest teams was suddenly in search of a new head coach.GM Joe Schoen could be gone before Jaxson Dart’s second season with the GiantsgettyJoe Schoen was allowed to remain as the Giants’ general manager — and he was given the green light to search for a new coach, despite fronting a team that has gone 5-22 since the start of the 2024 season. Why did Giants fire coach but keep GM? “The interesting thing is to move on from the coach and not the GM, and then say the GM will lead the search for the next head coach,” NFL insider Dan Graziano exclusively told talkSPORT. “That’s the team telling you, we think this is a well put together team, it’s just not being coached well enough.“They’ve blown four games where they had double-digit leads, including two where they had those leads in the final four minutes of regulation. So I guess you can see their case.” Jaxson Dart represents real hope for the Giants. The No. 25 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft has answered his early season promotion by completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,417 yards, 10 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 93.5 rating.Entering Week 11, Dart is in the top 20 of talkSPORT’s QB rankings. But the Giants are just 2-5 with Dart as their starting QB, and New York could be forced to turn to veteran Jameis Winston if the rookie isn’t cleared from a concussion in time for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. “I do think that that’s something that the organization would like to see going forward, is a little bit of just keep him out of situations that could do the most harm,” Graziano said.Schoen’s record counts against him The Giants are 20-40-1 since Schoen became GM in January 2022.Dart needs a new coach with the New York GiantsgettyCan Giants protect Dart from himself?Jaxson Dart would be a lock for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.If the New York Giants QB could stay healthy.Dart has 57 rushes for 317 yards and seven touchdowns, but his running has sometimes led to trouble.“He’s a kid and I think it has to be coached out of him to some extent,” Graziano told talkSPORT. “I think they could probably cut back on the designed runs. Malik Nabers not there, Cam Skattebo not there. They’re shorthanded in what they can do on offense. And his running has been a big part of what’s generated offense for them.“So you don’t want to get rid of it, but you also don’t want him to put himself in a position where he’s going to cause himself problems.”Like Daboll, Schoen’s only winning season (9-7-1) was his first one.Schoen could’ve been fired last year, which saw New York go 3-14 while frustrated Giants fans watched Saquon Barkley win the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. “I’ll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I’ll tell you that,” Giants co-owner and president John Mara said to Schoen on HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks.’“In a perfect world, I’d still like to have him back,” Mara also told Schoen.“We’re not going to franchise him,” Schoen said. “It doesn’t make any sense to franchise him. Could we get something in trading? What are we really going to get?”Schoen’s track record is even worse when the release of Daniel Jones is factored in.Only Titans are worse than G-Men 31. New York Giants (2-8)A banged-up Jaxson Dart might want to sit out the rest of the season. The Giants rookie keeps getting hammered, while New York’s biggest question has already been answered. After almost getting fired last year, the Giants parted ways with divisive head coach Brian Daboll on Monday.talkSPORT ranks the best teams in the NFL New York let Barkley and Jones slip away The ex-Giant is a leading contender for NFL Comeback Player of the Year, while the Indianapolis Colts are 8-2 and on top of the AFC South.Graziano said that interim head coach Mike Kafka will get a shot to prove he can be the full-time leader in 2026. “(He has) been working with Jaxson Dart, obviously, and was a finalist for some head coach jobs in recent cycles — Seattle, Arizona both took long looks at him,” Graziano said. “I think he’ll get a look, especially if they finished the season strong. I think he’ll be a candidate. But obviously they’ll do a full search and they’ll have to comply with all the rules.”But Graziano also pointed out that the Giants chose the opposite ‘firing’ path of the Miami Dolphins, who parted ways with GM Chris Grier while retaining Mike McDaniel as head coach. Schoen could still be sacked as GM “They fired the GM, kept the coach,” Graziano said. “That’s the Dolphins telling you, we think this team wasn’t put together the right way.”Daniel Jones has been a different QB since leaving New YorkGettyAs for Schoen, it’s not guaranteed that he’ll remain with New York. The Giants could be operating on their own internal timetable, while Jacksonville proved last year that a decision isn’t final until it’s truly final. “We’ll see if Joe Schoen gets to stay,” Graziano said. “Last year, the Jaguars said their GM (Trent Baalke) would lead their search for the head coach. And when they found out they couldn’t get the coach they wanted, they fired the GM and hired Liam Coen.“So it could still turn on Joe Schoen. But, right now, the organization is standing behind him, saying it has faith in him to find the next head coach.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more
