The incident occurred while labourers were drilling holes in the rock in preparation for blasting at the Obra area, the police said.Upon receiving information about the incident, officials rushed to the spot and called in specialised rescue teams, which immediately began efforts to pull out the trapped labourers. Several residents rushed to the spot as news of the collapse spread.“We have recovered one body so far, and we suspect that around 10 more people are still trapped inside. The rescue operation is underway,” Sonbhadra District Magistrate Badri Nath Singh said.The deceased was identified as Raju Singh Gaur, a resident of Parsoi village in Sonbhadra. According to sources, his identity was confirmed after rescue personnel dialled numbers from the mobile phone recovered from his pocket.The DM added that an inquiry will be conducted to determine how the incident occurred and under what circumstances the collapse took place.According to initial information, on Saturday afternoon, portions of stone and debris collapsed at the mine, causing several labourers to fall inside and become trapped.Rescue teams from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police reached the quarry and began the rescue operation. Debris removal continued throughout the night and is still ongoing.Story continues below this adPiyush Mordia, Additional Director General, Varanasi Zone, stated that due to the large size of the stones, extreme caution is necessary when clearing debris in an open-pit mine. He added that all necessary equipment for the operation is available.A local labourer told mediapersons that the incident occurred while drilling work was underway to prepare holes for blasting inside the mine. Suddenly, one side of the quarry wall collapsed, sending debris plunging nearly 150 feet.
