The Rotary Club of Demerara has marked a significant milestone in its ongoing Peace Programme by installing two Peace Poles in the Indigenous communities of Orealla and Siparuta in Region Six, Guyana. The recent unveiling furthered the club’s multi-faceted approach to Peace and Conflict Resolution—one of Rotary International’s seven key Areas of Focus. These newest installations, located at the Orealla Secondary School and Siparuta Primary School, are the first of their kind within an Indigenous village, signifying a broadening of the programme’s reach.Current Club President Domanique Cameron underscored the continuous commitment required to foster a peaceful environment.“Peace is not something we talk about once a year. It is something we practice and build with intention every day,” Ms. Cameron stated.“By placing these Peace Poles in Orealla and Siparuta, we are saying to every child who passes by that they are part of shaping a kinder, more understanding world. It is a reminder that peace begins with each of us, right where we are.”A Peace Pole is a global monument that universally displays the message and prayer: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”With over 250,000 Peace Poles in countries worldwide, the prayer aims to inspire unity across all cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. The Peace Pole Project originated in Japan, started by Masahisa Goi, who dedicated his life to this message after witnessing the destruction of World War II and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The placement of these monuments serves as an affirmation of peace, promoting Rotary’s wider goal of building a global culture of positive peace. Now in its fourth year, the Rotary Club of Demerara’s Peace Programme initially focused on public awareness and offering free Positive Peace training courses developed by Rotary International and the Institute of Economics & Peace. This initiative led to engagement with Guyana National Cadet Corps (GNCC) schools.A pilot school saw dozens of students complete the course and receive certificates, bolstering their academic and professional profiles.Following overwhelmingly positive reactions, the club has since expanded the programme to other GNCC schools, installing Peace Poles in conjunction with student course completion to provide context and continuity to their training. In the past year, the club has also linked this with District 7030’s ‘Pollinators for Peace’ initiative, supplying schools with the resources to plant and maintain their own Pollinator Peace Garden near their Peace Poles, connecting environmental harmony with social peace.Beyond the school programme, the Rotary Club of Demerara previously installed Peace Poles in public areas, including the Lamaha Street Promenade and the Kingston Seawall, affording the general public a reminder to pause and reflect on the value of peace.Rotary International continues to play an expansive role in global peace, from negotiations to fostering grassroots positive peace worldwide. The Rotary Club of Demerara remains a proud supporter of this initiative, ensuring that current and future generations in communities and schools across Guyana have a tangible symbol to contemplate, appreciate, and enjoy peace. The post Rotary Demerara extends Peace Programme to Orealla and Siparuta appeared first on News Room Guyana.
