Following meeting with President Trump, Syria’s president says no peace talks planned with Israel, citing the Golan Heights.By World Israel News StaffSyria’s president said Monday that his country is not currently interested in establishing diplomatic ties with Israel, dashing the Trump administration’s hopes of brokering a peace treaty between Israel and Syria in the near future. On Monday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House, marking the first time a Syrian ruler has visited Washington, and the second time the two leaders have met face to face.During their nearly two-hour-long meeting, Trump and al-Sharaa discussed Syria’s inclusion in an international coalition against the ISIS terror organization, as well as efforts by the US to secure a border agreement between Israel and Syria, reestablishing a demilitarized zone on the Israel-Syria frontier and reducing tensions between the two countries.Following the meeting, however, al-Sharaa told Fox News that Syria is not planning on entering the Abraham Accords, ruling out a broader peace deal with Israel at this time.“The situation in Syria is different from the situation of the countries who signed on to the Abraham Accords,” al-Sharaa said. “Syria has borders with Israel, and Israel occupies the Golan Heights since 1967.”The Trump administration has hoped to capitalize on the momentum of the current security deal talks between Israel and Syria, with the ultimate goal of achieving the first-ever peace deal between Damascus and Jerusalem. The two countries technically remain in a state of war since 1948, having only agreed to an armistice in 1949 and a disengagement of forces arrangement in 1974.Despite his rejection of peace talks with Israel in the near future, al-Sharaa said he was open to American efforts to initiate a major change in Syria-Israel relations at some point in the future.“We are not going to enter into negotiation directly right now. Maybe the United States administration with President Trump will help us reach this kind of negotiation.”Recently, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations said that Israel and Syria were on the verge of reaching a new security deal, adding that an announcement could come any day now, Syrian state media reported. The post Citing Golan Heights, Syrian president rules out full peace with Israel – for now appeared first on World Israel News.
