‘Something’s gone wrong’ – Harry Kane concern emerges after England win as role questioned

Harry Kane’s recent positional play for England does not sit well with one talkSPORT pundit. The Three Lions skipper earned his 111th cap in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley but failed to add to his record goal-haul of 76. However, Kane was able to show off his array of attributes as club side Bayern Munich can attest to.Beyond his 23 goals in 17 games for the Bundesliga champions this season, Kane has willingly displayed a hybrid role, often dropping deep to play as a No.10 and at times starting attacks from the defensive line. While Kane’s ubiquitous nature has been a recent point of discussion, it acts as nothing new to Tottenham fans who often purred over the star’s insatiable work ethic. But with global eyes now fixed on the 32-year-old more than ever, Kane’s skillset is now a topical debate, however it appears that not everyone is sold on it.Discussing Kane’s recent transition on The Sports Bar, Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy were full of praise for the Three Lions captain but vented their positional concerns ahead of next summer’s World Cup.Kane told his positioning is counterproductiveCundy told talkSPORT: “There was one occasion however he picked the ball up and he was the deepest outfield player on the pitch but he played a brilliant 60-yard ball into Rashford.”Co-host O’Hara then asked the question: “Do we want Harry Kane picking the ball up off the back four?”The ex-Spurs and Wolves midfielder continued: “Listen, I love it, it’s breathtaking to watch and I think he’s fantastic. I’ve seen him do it for Bayern Munich, He plays in a little No.10 role. He gets in little pockets and his ball retention is incredible, his passes are great.“I love it, but do we need it? I want to see Harry Kane affect the game in the final third.“I don’t want to see him on the other side of the half way line picking the ball up deeper than Declan Rice. I don’t want to see that.GettyKane might be England’s No.9 but he has recently positioned himself as both a No.8 and a No.10[/caption]“There’s one point in the second half he’s on the edge of the box making a sliding tackle. It’s a great tackle but for me, why is Harry Kane on the edge of the box?“Something has gone wrong positionally if Harry Kane is diving in on the edge of the box to make a tackle.”Cundy agreed in part with his colleague but did reserve praise for Kane endeavour during transitions.“Harry Kane has matured into an all-round attacking player,” Cundy added. “I take your point but when he does drop deep, I see him ping balls out and then ten seconds later he’s in the box to try and get it.“He can’t do it from the edge of our own box but it will be interesting to see how that relationship develops.”How Kane’s deeper position can work for England at the World Cup“Harry Kane is one of the best players in the world right now,” Cundy continued.” He can do so many jobs and he does them effortlessly. He scores goals for fun, look at what he’s doing at Bayern Munich.GettyKane has been in superb goalscoring form for Bayern Munich this season[/caption]Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy spoke at length about Kane’s positioning during the win over SerbiaGettyKane’s deeper position reminded Cundy of Wayne Rooney transition towards the end of his career[/caption]“Technically, he’s such a brilliant footballer. He’s like Wayne Rooney, wherever you put him on the pitch even if he’s out of position, he’d probably be the best player on the pitch.“I’ve seen Wayne Rooney play midfield, No.10 , left wing, right wing, centre forward.”O’Hara then interrupted Cundy to say England do not need Kane to occupy a role befitting of a defensive midfielder.“I know but what that does is frees up the space in behind,” Cundy replied. “We do have runners. That’s why I think he (England boss Thomas Tuchel) likes pace out wide. That’s why [Jack] Grealish is going to miss out (on World Cup selection).“He likes [Anthony] Gordon, he likes [Marcus] Rashford, he likes [Bukayo] Saka, [Jude] Bellingham, [Noni] Madueke and [Morgan] Rogers can do that .“They can fill the void he leaves, I don’t have a problem with it.”
