With his PDC Tour card for next year yet to be confirmed, he then came into the last 16 desperate for another victory. And that’s exactly what he pulled off, with the moment almost proving too much for him on the stage. As Wenig, who took out ten of 19 attempts at doubles in the match, hit double 20 to win it, he looked in disbelief. He put his hands to his head and stared back at Springer before walking into a long hug from his opponent. The 31-year-old then stepped away and appeared to be fighting back tears in a hugely emotional moment. Sky Sports commentator Stuart Pyke narrated the moment and labelled the victory as ‘the biggest win of his life’. Wenig started the game on the back foot, going 2-0 down – but he remained composed and brought things level to 2-2.Springer then went on to take a 5-3 lead and things appeared to be getting away from Wenig before he won the next three legs.Eventually, that fighting spirit landed him a 9-8 advantage and he was able to win the all-important 18th leg to go through.Wenig had to hold back tears as he beat Springer in the Grand Slam of Darts last 16@OfficialPDC / X‘This is so amazing’Wenig is through to his first ever Grand Slam of Darts quarter-finals in his first ever appearance in the tournament. He banked himself a whopping £25,000 for reaching the last eight and his emotion poured out in his interview on stage.“I don’t find words for this, this is so amazing,” he said post-match.“The stage is not my friend, I had really big problems, but I came through the group, to go to the quarter-finals is unbelievable.“It’s difficult to explain, Niko and I are good friends, he is the better player…“I took my chances and was really nervous, but in the end I took ten legs and wow.”It was clear to see how much the win meant for Wenig@OfficialPDC / XWenig’s hopes of a PDC Tour CardAfter his incredible win over Springer, Wenig has massively boosted his chances of retaining his tour card for next year. He started the day 69th in the world, just outside the top 64 that will automatically claim a tour card. But the victory and progress to the quarter-finals have seen him jump up to 63rd and into the eligible places.Wenig will now play one of Michael van Gerwen or Danny Noppert for the chance to reach the semi-finals. The match will take place on Saturday, November 15.A win in that game would see him reach the final day in Wolverhampton and compete in the semi-finals.
