Ferrari chairman John Elkann has made a rare public statement about his Formula 1 team’s poor season. In fact, he’s deliberately singled out star duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, telling them to ‘focus on driving’.Elkann (left) doesn’t have much to smile about in F1 or with Juventus in football, but has left Ferrari knowAFP Elkann’s comments come after a particularly poor weekend for the Italian squad with both drivers failing to score a point in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.Such a fumble has seen the record constructors’ championship winner drop to fourth in this year’s standings, losing out on tens of millions in prize money. Both Hamilton and Leclerc were very downbeat following the Sao Paulo race which Elkann wasn’t a fan of.Speaking at a sponsorship event in Rome, the chairman was discussing his team’s World Endurance Championship title this year, and compared the F1 team unfavourably.“Ferrari wins when it is united,” he began. “The result in WEC has taught us that. “When everyone works together, great things can be achieved.”Turning to F1, he continued: “Brazil was a huge disappointment. “In Formula 1, on the one hand, we have the mechanics who have done their job.“Between poles and pit stops; the engineers are the same with the car which has evidently improved. The rest has not been up to par.”Then seemingly making it clear who he meant by ‘the rest’ he added: “We have drivers who need to focus on driving, talk less, and remember that important races lie ahead.“It’s not impossible to finish second. This is the most important message coming from Bahrain [WEC title]: when Ferrari is a team, we win.”Ferrari saw top honours in another premier motorsport series, yet are craving F1 successAFPHow bad are things at Ferrari?Ferrari, F1’s most illustrious team with 16 team titles, hasn’t won the constructors’ championship since 2008, with their last drivers’ championship win a year earlier in 2007.It gets worse too – the Scuderia haven’t won a Grand Prix this year, and a barren run would be their first since 2021.Things are just as historically bad for seven-time champion Hamilton, who has broken the record for most Ferrari races without a podium with 21, surpassing the previous record of 19.Uniting the most successful driver and team in the sport’s history seemed like a dream, yet Hamilton said it was quickly becoming a ‘nightmare’ in Brazil when it was clear they were going to struggle for points. However, he did try to foster some unity in a different interview on TV.“I love Brazil, and everyone in the team,” the 40-year-old said. “Every single person in this team turns up every week and gives it their absolute best.Hamilton made some headlines by admitting his Ferrari dream was becoming a ‘nightmare’Getty“To come away with nothing, to not finish a race for the second time in the year – it’s really devastating. I feel terrible for the team. “I’m sorry for my part in qualifying, putting myself in that position.”
