Dan Campbell had his own Superman moment for the Detroit Lions on Sunday, but unlike Clark Kent, he transformed into the sideline hero when he put his glasses on.After Campbell took over play-calling duties from first-year Lions offensive coordinator John Morton in their clash against the Washington Commanders, the Lions steamrolled their way to a 44-22 victory on the road with US President Donald Trump in attendance. In the first quarter of the game, with the score still at 0-0, Campbell – with his glasses on – appeared to be calling the plays, something he had previously ‘indicated was possible’, amid reports of some ‘disconnect’ between Morton and some of the players and coaches, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. At halftime with the Lions leading 25-10, Campbell told FOX Sports about the offensive shake-up. “It’s just a changeup, we wanted to mix things up. Everyone is still involved,” he said, also being clear to emphasize Morton’s importance to the team. “John is vital to me. He’s all team, man. That’s all he cares about. He just wants to win.”Detroit looking like the Lions of oldWith Campbell at the helm, the offense came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, much like they did in the first, and finished the contest having amassed 546 total yards of offense from 68 plays, including going 5-for-10 on third downs and a season-high 30 first downs in the game. This performance sent social media into a frenzy, with some fans joking that what they saw from the team on the field was a direct result of Campbell wearing his ‘play-calling glasses.’“Lions do not mess around after a loss. Dan Campbell shook up the offense, put on his play-calling glasses, and Lions look invigorated,” one fan posted to X (formerly Twitter).“The world isn’t ready for Glasses Dan Campbell,” another wrote, as a third followed suit and added, “Dan Campbell wearing the reading glasses on the sideline so he can order up plays off the menu in his hand.”“Dan Campbell added the reading glasses this week. We’re all f***ed if this guy’s been coaching for the last 3 years and couldn’t see,” a fourth joked.Jared Goff was mightily protected by his o-line as he erupted for 320 yards and 3 TDsGettyJameson Williams was involved more in Campbell’s offensive scheme than he has been all season longGettyNFL Power Rankings8. Having struggled to get the newly-extended Jameson Williams involved throughout much of the early part of the season, Campbell had no issues in getting the wide receiver his targets on Sunday as he finished the game with a season-high 119 yards and a touchdown from six receptions. Even the 24-year-old had jokes for his head coach’s new look, laughing on the podium postgame as he said, “that’s the first time i’ve seen him with glasses, it’s a different look for sure.”Campbell speaks out on offensive changesAs they made their way to 6-3 on the season, and second in the NFC North, the Lions made history by becoming just the sixth road team to produce at least 320 net passing yards and three passing touchdowns, as well as 225-plus rushing yards and two rushing scores. After the win, Campbell spoke to the media and addressed in more depth why he chose to take over play-calling duties. “It was just, ‘Let’s try something a little different,'” he said. “I know what I want to do and how I want to do it. “Now with that being said, this is a collaborative effort now. I was taking input from John Morton that whole time.”Campbell’s decision to take over play-calling duties saw the Lions play like the Super Bowl contenders they have shown to be over the past few seasonsGetty“Let’s just see if maybe a different play caller can maybe get us a little rhythm,” Campbell added. “That’s all. Honestly, it’s nothing more than that. We made a change, and it was good for today.”He even had time to fire a subtle dig at Commanders head coach Dan Quinn’s side, saying, “You could just feel the line of scrimmage move today.“Honestly, I feel like you could’ve called anything today and they would’ve made it work.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
