‘Glow doesn’t always come with a price tag’: Celeb macrobiotic coach lauds homemade ghee cream over store-bought moisturiser

Celebrity macrobiotic coach Dr Shilpa Arora took to social media to share that ghee cream made at home can rival any store bought mosituriser.She applied the cream, made by following a 5,00o year old Ayurvedic recipe where it is washed 100 times, and compared it against an expensive cosmetic moisturiser. The results astounded her. “I tried both — the luxury @lamer and the humble Ayurvedic ghee cream. And trust me, glow doesn’t always come with a price tag,” she mentioned in the caption of her Instagram video.What is washed ghee?Anadi Sharma, Ayurvedic practitioner, shared that washed ghee is an ancient beauty secret and widely used in Ayurveda. “It is prepared by washing ghee a hundred times in a copper vessel, leaving a pure non-greasy cloud-like whipped cream. It can be used as a moisturiser that reaches all seven layers of the skin,” he elaborated, adding that in Ayurveda, it was used to calm burning sensations and beat skin diseases, such as chickenpox.As the name goes, you need to wash butter or thick malai extracted from milk 100 times with cold water.Warm up the ghee until it is liquid.Place it in a copper mixing bowl and add two cups of cold water.Now mix it with an electric blender or a spatula to get out excess water.Repeat this 100 times.“The end result will be a white ball of a whipped light airy product. Store it in an airtight container and this would last for six months or more,” he said. Apply ghee on your lips to wake up with supple and soft lips. (Source: Freepik)Ghee vs regular moisturiserBut how does it fare against over the counter moisturisers? Indianexpress.com reached out to a skin expert and found out.Dr Shweta Nakhawa, consultant dermatologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane told indianexpress.com that pure ghee can be extremely beneficial if applied externally as a topical treatment. It is rich in healthy fats to support the skin barrier, vitamins A, D, and E, which aid in cell repair, and have moisturising properties to help promote a healthy glow. It also contains antioxidants that neutralise free radicals and slow down the ageing process.Story continues below this ad“It helps heal the skin barrier and soothe mild irritations. When consumed, the healthy fats in ghee support gut health, hormone balance, and skin nutrition,” she said, adding that some people also use ghee as a DIY mask with turmeric or honey, but first, do a patch test.For dry skin: Massage your body with lukewarm ghee to have soft and supple skin.For chapped and dark lips: Apply ghee on your lips to wake up with supple and soft lips.For dark circles: Ghee is a cheaper under eye cream. For them, regular store bought moisturisers which are lightweight, and gel-based would work best, she added.She also suggested using unadulterated products. “Choose only pure, organic, or homemade ghee without additives.
