Big Talent Entertainment boss Eddy Kenzo has opened up about one of the biggest decisions of his career, rejecting offers from some of the world’s biggest record labels, including Sony Music, Warner Music, Disney, and Universal Music Group.According to Kenzo, each of these industry giants approached him with lucrative deals, with Warner Music even offering a staggering USD $1 million. Despite the tempting figures, he chose a path many artists fear, remaining independent. Kenzo explained that his decision was driven by what he has observed in the global music industry. He noted that while major labels promise worldwide reach and financial boosts, many artists under them appear restricted, creatively and contractually. He added that even when such contracts officially expire, the artist’s obligations often remain until the label has fully recovered what it spent—and more. When you take a look at artists signed under record labels, some seem like they are prisoners. Personally, Warner Music reached out to me with an offer of USD1M. Sony Music, Disney, and Universal all shared their signing agreements with me via email. If I signed with them, they would give me their money, and I would sell my catalog to them for 10 years or whatever the contract would say, which would look like a loan. Because they have to milk you until their money and interest returns. Because even when the contract expires for them, it stays valid until they meet their goal.Kapeke: ‘Sitya Loss’ is the only Eddy Kenzo song worthy Grammy NominationKenzo referenced Nigerian star Tekno Miles, who once dominated the African music scene but has since become quieter after signing with major labels like Universal.Kenzo used Tekno as an example of how big deals can sometimes derail rather than elevate an artist’s momentum.VIDEO: Most of the artists signed to those major labels are like prisoners. Labels like Sony Music, Universal, and others reached out to me, but I turned them down.- @eddykenzoficial #NBSAfter5 #NBSUpdates pic.twitter.com/LGaN6xCZ4M— NBS After 5 (@NBSAfter5) November 13, 2025The post Eddy Kenzo opens up about turning down Sony Music, Warner Music, and Universal Music Group appeared first on MBU.
