‘Not convinced it will work’ – Chelsea’s ‘next Jadon Sancho’ stuck in catch-22 situation

Wait 5 sec.

Jamie Gittens won’t fail to see the irony in his ‘next Jadon Sancho’ tag proving as relevant to Borussia Dortmund highs as his Chelsea lows. The 21-year-old had his standing in the Blues pecking order underlined by playing just seven minutes of the 3-0 win over Wolves.Gittens played just seven minutes against Wolves and was consoled by Chelsea captain Reece JamesGettyIt was against the same opponents that Gittens scored his only Chelsea goal – a stunning volley in a 4-3 victory in the Carabao Cup.However, that hasn’t done much to change his standing under Enzo Maresca, with Estevao chosen as his first-choice substitute off the bench on Saturday, while earning future Ballon d’Or winner shouts.Gittens instantly drew comparisons to fellow Englishman Sancho when he swapped Manchester City’s academy for Borussia Dortmund.Yet ironically, he now finds himself playing back-up to Alejandro Garnacho upon his return to England, as Sancho did at Man United. Gittens started Chelsea’s Premier League opener in August, but has played almost 100 minutes fewer than Garnacho in the top-flight, despite the Argentine not making his debut until mid-September.To add insult to injury, the latter was not even fully fit when he arrived in west London, having been frozen out by Ruben Amorim.European football broadcaster Andy Brassell has now questioned whether Chelsea needed Gittens, having rated his start at 5/10.His £55m transfer was also questioned by Jamie Carragher for not being an upgrade on Noni Madueke following his sale to Arsenal.“He scored that brilliant goal against Wolves in the Cup as well, which underlined his talent,” Brassell exclusively told talkSPORT.com.“I always wondered if Chelsea really needed him, to be perfectly honest. And the thing is, he was coming from a position where he had a brilliant first half to last season and quite a poor second half.”Gittens has been reduced to a substitute role in the Premier LeagueMaresca also turned to Estevao as his first-choice winger sub against WolvesGettyNot convinced that it will work at ChelseaGittens broke a 23-year record by becoming the youngest Englishman to score against Real Madrid in the Champions League last October.Yet he has not played a full 90 since January and only featured for 13 minutes at the Club World Cup prior to his arrival at Chelsea.Brassell added: “He seemed to struggle, at least partially, with the departure of Nuri Sahin, who’s a great champion of his and a real big fan of his. They’d worked together before when Sahin was on the coaching staff, and he really believed in Gittens.“Then along comes Niko Kovac, and it’s all, ‘Do your running off the ball. If you feel tired, do some more running. “It’s a completely different way, really, of playing, and I think that took some of the lustre off his attacking play, and he really struggled to make himself an important part of that Dortmund team that did so well in the run-in. Gittens was a highly coveted talent at DortmundGetty“So it felt to me that Chelsea were buying one for the future as well as for the present. But it’s sort of been a bit of a reclamation project as well.“For him to get consistent minutes, it’s a bit of a catch-22 because you need to be playing at your best level to get consistent minutes.“But he needs to be playing consistent minutes to be at his best level as well. So I’m not 100 per cent convinced that it will work at Chelsea.“We’ve seen little hints of what he can do, but it’s not been amazing so far.”Maresca confirmed ahead of the win over Wolves that Pedro Neto and Garnacho have established themselves as his first-choice pairing.“It’s on the ball and it’s off the ball, it’s on both sides that Pedro is doing fantastic,” Maresca said in Friday’s press conference.“I think the other one that is doing well, that is improving, and he has to not stop because I don’t allow him to drop and to stop, is Garnacho. He’s doing very well on the ball and off the ball.
