On May 2, the newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts, premiered in theaters nationwide. However, unlike past Marvel films, this new movie did not feature a superhero. Instead, it featured a group of antiheroes whom audiences loved in previous films, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), and John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). Credit: Marvel StudiosRelated: Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025: Everything You Need To KnowThe film opens with Yelena Belova, haunted by grief and working off-government missions, being sent to eliminate fellow operatives –John Walker, Ghost (Ava Starr), and Taskmaster — under orders from a corrupt CIA director, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who is trying to cover up her involvement in the clandestine “Sentry” super-soldier project. Instead, the mission backfires: Taskmaster is killed, and the group stumbles upon Bob Reynolds, a mysterious survivor presumably frozen from the Sentry tests.United by necessity, they escape and are joined by Red Guardian (Alexei Shostakov) and Bucky Barnes. Pursued by Valentina’s agents, they rally together to rescue Bob and infiltrate the former Avengers Tower, now dubbed the “Watchtower.” Credit: Video Screenshot, ‘Thunderbolts*’, MarvelRelated: Pedro Pascal Reportedly Done With Marvel ‘Avengers’ Franchise After Recent Fall OutHowever, Bob’s hidden trauma unlocks his immense powers as Sentry, spawning his darker persona, the Void, which engulfs New York in supernatural darkness. Entering his subconscious realm, Yelena confronts Bob’s fears and past, ultimately freeing him with empathy and solidarity—restoring both him and the city.In the aftermath, Valentina publicly rebrands the team as the New Avengers, though Yelena warns she’s no longer in charge.Credit: Video Screenshot, ‘Thunderbolts*’, MarvelUnfortunately, while the characters in the film are very popular and Thunderbolts* received great reviews from both critics and audiences, the film did not perform well at the box office. Sadly, it had one of the worst box office openings for a Marvel film. However, in the age of streaming, a poor box office performance does not mean that the film is dead. There have been a number of movies that have not done well in theaters, but have dominated Disney+; movies like Elemental (2023), Wish (2024), and Snow White (2025). And in less than two weeks, Thunderbolts* will have that same opportunity. Now, just days after that information began making the rounds, Disney has confirmed that the movie will indeed hit its streaming platform on that day!One last shot at redemptionStream Marvel Studios’ #Thunderbolts* on August 27, only on Disney+. pic.twitter.com/8i7aXknExx— Disney+ (@DisneyPlus) August 14, 2025Unfortunately, Marvel’s Thunderbolts* followed a troubling trend with many recent Marvel films. In the past, an MCU film was almost guaranteed to be a blockbuster hit. In recent years, many of the studio’s films have had shaky box office numbers. 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine was one of the best-performing films of the year. However, The Marvels (2023) had Marvel’s worst box office opening in history, and Captain America: Brave New World struggled and was considered by some to be a monetary flop. It remains to be seen if Thunderbolts* will follow Disney’s path of funding streaming success, or if viewers are uninterested. Will you be watching Thunderbolts* when it hits Disney+ on August 27?
