Due to heavy rainfall and strong current, Sayyad got trapped in the middle of the river (Special Arrangement)A 30-year-old man was rescued by local residents from Mithi river where he had gone for swimming on Tuesday amid heavy rain battering Mumbai.In another rain-related incident, a 93 -year-old man, who was on oxygen support as part of his treatment, and his 85-year-old wife were rescued from the Teachers Colony in Kurla (West) after flooding and disruption of power supply at their society.According to police, the person rescued from Mithi river was identified as Aman Imtiyaz Sayyad, a teacher who lives in Filterpada area in Powai.Police said Sayyad had gone to the river, near his residence, for swimming with a group of youngsters around 11.30 am.Due to heavy rainfall and strong current, Sayyad got trapped in the middle of the river.“He could not hold himself due to strong currents. As he screamed for help, local residents immediately rushed to save him. While he was holding on to a brick of the retaining wall of the river, people lowered a rope into the river and rescued him,” said Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 10, Mumbai.The police have warned people from entering the water in Powai lake or Mithi river.Story continues below this adA group of the people were also found swimming in Powai lake in the afternoon and when the police reached there, they came out and fled the spot, said an official.Senior citizen couple rescuedMeanwhile, Nainan George and his wife Achiamma, who live at C Wing of Teachers Colony on LBS Road, were rescued by police on Tuesday after they received an emergency call.Nainan George was undergoing treatment and dependent on oxygen support, said senior inspector Vikas Mahamunkar of the Kurla police station.“I received a call from one of the neighbours of Nainan George that due to heavy rain, water has accumulated around the society and power supply has been disrupted.
