One time I was in the median on the highway for like 4 hours waiting for a tow truck, and exactly two people stopped - one was a cop, the other was a dude who barely spoke English - so I sure wouldn't rely on people on the road being generous enough to give me free money if none of the can be bothered to pull over to be like "Hey do you need anything?" And I'm 5'3" so it's not like I was intimidating.
