Wait 5 sec.

Japan was shaken near Miyazaki, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 only 11 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Miyazaki, Japan, early morning on Sunday, August 17th, 2025, at 6:13 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Takanabe (pop. 20,200) located 31 km from the epicenter, Kawaminami (pop. 15,400) 33 km away, Miyazaki (pop. 398,200) 35 km away, Saito (pop. 29,300) 37 km away, Tsuma (pop. 34,300) 38 km away, Hyuga (pop. 60,000) 50 km away, Nobeoka (pop. 119,500) 67 km away, and Miyakonojo (pop. 161,100) 73 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.Earthquake data: Date & time: Aug 17, 2025 06:13 am (GMT +9) local time (16 Aug 2025 21:13 GMT)Magnitude: 5.7Depth: 10.00 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude: 31.99°N / 131.76°E (Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan)Primary data source: GFZ
