Manchester United have been warned against re-signing former goalkeeper David de Gea.A report in The Sun has linked them with ‘hush-hush’ talks about snapping up the Spaniard from Fiorentina despite leaving Old Trafford in 2023.GettyDe Gea is now starring for Fiorentina in Serie A, aged 34[/caption]In his 12 seasons after an £18.9million move from Atletico Madrid, he became the club’s seventh-highest appearance maker, and broke Peter Schmeichel’s clean sheet record. He also won a Premier League title, and FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Europa League during an iconic spell at the club. The Spaniard did, though, have moments of poor form which clouded his reputation, while he was also criticised for his limited ball-playing ability.Manchester United replaced him with Andre Onana in a £43.8m transfer but the ex-Ajax star also oscillates between the sublime and the ridiculous. He saw himself dropped by current manager Ruben Amorim towards the end of last season, but backup Altay Bayındır has also failed to impress. Now, with the Premier League campaign under way, the Red Devils are being linked with an outrageous swoop to re-sign De Gea, who got a hero’s reception in a recent friendly. But former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino doesn’t believe it’s a good idea for the club.“I can’t see that, I just can’t see that story,” Cascarino said.“It may be true but I just don’t think Manchester United would want to go back there.“I think the club and where they are, the stature of the club, that it feels like they’re going back in time to a goalkeeper that’s been there.GettyManchester United fans still hold a candle for De Gea[/caption]“I think it would cause a lot of problems for Onana being at the club as well.“Any new goalkeeper you might not like, but especially the guy that you were brought in to replace. That feels like a lot of baggage there.”Who else could Manchester United sign?Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is free to leave Paris Saint-Germain, could be an alternative with Man City also reportedly interested in his services. That’s despite already re-signing James Trafford this summer from Burnley for £31million.Asked if the Italian was an option for Manchester United, Cascarino added: “I would say no, because quite clearly, Amorim and Pep Guardiola want goalkeepers that really play out from the back on a lot of occasions.“Donnarumma, don’t get me wrong, he had an extraordinary end to last season, but there were many doubts on him. You know, a lot of people thought he wasn’t gonna be the keeper for PSG.”GettyDonnarumma will be wanted by a number of top clubs[/caption]“Made loads of mistakes, even in the early rounds of the Champions League last season. But the second part of the season, he was tremendous for them.“Against Liverpool, he made saves, Arsenal, he made saves. He did it all, all of the teams, especially the Premier League teams.”
