To describe horror legend Robert Englund as “the man of our dreams” might sound like a compliment, but the truth is that he terrorized and slaughtered teens in their sleep for years. His initial reign as Freddy Krueger lasted for a decade. He first appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), terrorizing Nancy Thompson, before bookending the series with the meta sequel Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), which saw him terrorize Heather Langenkamp, the actress who played the unfortunate Elm Street teen in the first film. But in 2003, he returned one final time in the franchise-merging spinoff Freddy vs. Jason. The 2003 film was Englund’s last-ever outing as the iconic dream demon. Since the clash-of-horror-titans flick, we’ve had nothing but the 2010 remake of the original 1984 film.Credit: New Line CinemaWill Robert Englund Return as Freddy Krueger? The odds of seeing Englund slip back into the fedora, green-and-red striped sweater, razor-fingered glove, and, of course, all those prosthetics, are extremely low.Not only has he announced his retirement from the franchise, but an inevitable reboot will likely pick a new actor in the same way the 2010 film cast Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy. The good news is that Englund’s Freddy is back to haunt our nightmares, as the original Elm Street seven-movie collection has been made available in 4K Ultra HD.
