Despite being two goals up with five minutes to go, Tottenham succumbed to a late PSG comeback before falling short in the penalty shootout in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup.This one will sting for Tottenham fans. For so long, the Europa League winners had the Champions League winners on the ropes in Udine, controlling the game and sensing the chance to lift silverware in their very first competitive outing of the season. But football can be cruel, and a late Paris Saint-Germain fightback saw Thomas Frank’s debut as Tottenham boss end in a Super Cup penalty shootout defeat.Still, Frank will have left the Stadio Friuli with plenty of positives as his side showed plenty of moments of quality that will give him confidence heading into the Premier League opener.Frank named a full-strength starting XI but rolled out a surprise 3-4-1-2 shape, with Kevin Danso joining new captain Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in a back three. Dominic Solanke made the bench after recovering from injury, though he wasn’t risked from the start.Across the technical area, Luis Enrique also wanted to add another trophy to his name, as he fielded his strongest side. New signing Lucas Chevalier was handed his debut in goal just four days after arriving in Paris.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramSuper Cup first half: PSG 0-1 TottenhamFrom kick-off, Spurs’ backline looked anything but fragile. The first opening came when Pedro Porro’s bending long-range strike flashed just past the post after a sloppy PSG turnover. Tottenham’s throw-ins were a weakness last season, but Kevin Danso’s long throws were clearly something PSG weren’t prepared for, with his very first one of the game landing inside their box and causing a moment of panic before they scrambled it clear.PSG’s first real look at goal came via Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose tidy footwork was let down by a wayward shot. At the other end, a rusty Richarlison nearly caught Chevalier off his line, only for the Frenchman to tip his audacious effort over.Mohammed Kudus then saw his powerful strike blocked in the PSG box before Ousmane Dembele blazed over for PSG on the other end. Ultimately, Tottenham broke the deadlock seven minutes before the break. Guglielmo Vicario sent in a deep free-kick into the PSG area, Romero nodded across, and although Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike was tipped onto the bar, Van de Ven was on hand to smash in the rebound. 1-0 to Tottenham.Kudus rattled the woodwork in stoppage time (flagged offside regardless) and Spurs went into the interval well on top.Spurs had 1.20 expected goals to PSG’s 0.27, with the Parisians failing to register a single shot on target despite having 70% possession. Frank’s first competitive 45 minutes in charge had gone exactly to plan.Super Cup second half: PSG 2-2 Spurs (PSG win 4-3 on penalties)Neither side made changes at the break, and almost instantly, Richarlison tested Chevalier again after pouncing on a loose pass.Minutes later, Spurs doubled their lead, and it came from another set-piece. Porro’s deep free-kick found Cristian Romero in at the back post, and the Argentine’s thumping header went past Chevalier’s glove. Spurs 2-0 PSG.Spurs’ third centre-back, Kevin Danso, nearly joined the scoresheet with a header into the side netting that had Spurs fans halfway through celebrating. Porro went close from another free-kick, before Vicario produced a stunning save to deny Desire Doue at the other end. Fabian Ruiz saw his follow-up blocked by Danso, while Bradley Barcola briefly thought he had scored, only to see the offside flag raised.Dembele squandered PSG’s best opening so far, firing wide after being teed up by Ruiz. With Spurs dropping deeper, Frank made changes: Solanke and teenager Archie Gray replaced Joao Palhinha and Richarlison, then Mathys Tel came on for Kudus. The momentum began to shift, and ominously so.With five minutes remaining, Kang-in Lee halved the deficit with a peach of a strike from outside the box, which fired past a helpless Vicario. PSG somehow still managed to equalise in the 4th minute of added time. Dembele finally beat Djed Spence down the flank and whipped in a superb cross for Goncalo Ramos to nod home. Spurs were 100 seconds from glory; now, they were heading for penalties.TottenhamPSG1. Solanke ✅2. Vitinha ❌3. Bentancur ✅4. Goncalo Ramos ✅5. Van de Ven ❌6. Dembele ✅7. Mathys Tel ❌8. The same club accused of tactical inflexibility last season just went toe-to-toe with a PSG team chasing an unprecedented haul of trophies and did so without a traditional creative No. 10, yet still produced more shots on target (13) than the Parisians (12).Joao Palhinha, Pape Sarr, Djed Spence, and Mohammed Kudus were particularly exceptional, and in truth, every starter impressed. Luis Enrique himself admitted after the game: “Tottenham deserved much more. They played better than us. Football is sometimes unfair. I’m happy for that, but I must say it was unfair.”This performance will undoubtedly motivate the squad and also show potential signings that Frank is building something worth joining. The Premier League kicks off this weekend, with Spurs hosting Burnley on Saturday. The post Super Cup Match Report as Tottenham leave both heartbroken yet full of hope appeared first on Spurs Web.
