The major decision of one of the IT majors, TCS in cutting down its workforce by 12,000 is shocking. Though the reasons cited are workforce restructuring, induction of AI and maximising the return on investment are common to the IT sector, mass reduction of employees would hit the already serving employees as well as the young engineering graduates.Reduction of workforce must happen in a gradual manner and in not on a massive scale. Other peer companies too would surely follow TCS in laying off employees.IT majors must handle these issues considering the long-term impact on country’s economy.RV BaskaranPuneChip movesApropos, ‘Reshaping the global semiconductor order,’ (July 28). The trilateral collaboration between India, US, and Taiwan in the semiconductor domain signifies a geopolitically astute move aimed at strategic decoupling from China-centric supply chains.Leveraging Taiwan’s technological sophistication, the US’s capital-intensive innovation ecosystem, and India’s emergent fabrication potential and engineering prowess, the alliance fosters a multipolar and resilient semiconductor infrastructure.This tripartite synergy not only mitigates systemic vulnerabilities caused by overdependence on a singular geopolitical axis but also catalyses technological sovereignty, economic fortification, and industrial diversification.In an era defined by digital hegemony, such alliances underscore the imperative of secure, autonomous, and democratically governed semiconductor ecosystems.N Sadhasiva ReddyBengaluruAI concernsTCS deciding to axe 12,000 jobs is not surprising. But it should sensitise us all as this is likely to affect the industry and pose a major challenge to the country’s s economy and also indivudual careers.AI is going to play havoc, in spite of assuaging statements from concerned quarters. When computers came banks’ business and profit increased but employment did not grow proportíonately.The scene is likely to be the same all over again. Careful planning and selective adoption of AI is needed.AG RajmohanAnantapurPublished on July 28, 2025Sign into Unlock benefits!Access 10 free stories per monthAccess to comment on every storySign up/Manage to our newslettersGet notified by email for early preview to new features, discounts & offers${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
