Former stalwart of Football League suspended from National League as statement released

Morecambe have had their National League membership suspended with immediate effect.The club have been sanctioned after failing to meet their financial obligations for the upcoming campaign.GettyMorecambe have been suspended by the National League ahead of the new season[/caption]GettyThe Shrimps are set to have their first three league matches postponed[/caption]As a result, they have been removed from the 2025/26 National League Cup.Morecambe are also set to have their first three league matches of the season postponed.The Shrimps remain under a transfer embargo blocking them from signing new players.A statement from the National League on Monday read: “The National League’s Compliance and Licensing Committee reconvened this afternoon to debate the on-going concerns surrounding Morecambe Football Club and its compliance with National League rules.“Discussions regarding the club’s ability to meet its financial obligations for the 2025/2026 season have again taken place.“It was decided further sanctions must be imposed, with the club’s membership to be suspended with immediate effect.“The club will also remain under embargo ahead of the new season.“Morecambe Football Club will also be removed from the National League Cup for the forthcoming season.“The Committee will meet again on Wednesday August 20 to determine if outstanding items have been satisfied, and to decide the Club’s ability to retain Membership in the Competition.”Derek Adams’ side had been set to begin their non-league return away against Boston United on August 9.GettyMorecambe were relegated from League Two last season after 18 years in the EFL[/caption]MORECAMBE FCOwner Jason Whittingham (left) sacked the club’s entire board earlier this summer[/caption]Morecambe were then due to host Brackley Town a week later before a midweek trip to Scunthorpe.All three of those fixtures are set to be postponed following the National League’s decision.It follows relegation from League Two last season after 18 years in the EFL.All but two of those campaigns were spent in the fourth tier, with promotion to League One secured via the play-offs in 2021.Morecambe spent two seasons in the third tier before relegation, but were demoted again last term after finishing bottom of League Two.The club, who play at the 6,476-capacity Mazuma Mobile Stadium, were founded back in 1920. Current majority shareholders Bond Group Investments Limited backed out of an EFL-approved sale of the club earlier this summer.The collapse of the deal saw owner Jason Whittingham sack the club’s board after they said they would put the Shrimps into administration.Former director James Wakefield addressed the situation on Monday.He told talkSPORT: “The National League are quite rightly asking questions of the owner.“He’s responsible for funding the club, he’s responsible for answering the questions and making sure the club can meet its obligations.“We don’t know what the situation is to be perfectly frank.
