Shedeur Sanders has perfect response for Browns GM who called him out for not being ‘smart’

Wait 5 sec.

The Cleveland Browns are using training camp to finally decide on who their starting quarterback will be. With four quarterbacks on the roster, excluding $230 million Deshaun Watson who is sidelined for the 2025 NFL season with an Achilles injury, head coach Kevin Stefanski and his coaching staff are paying close attention to their signal callers. Cleveland has a four-way battle for the starting QB role in 2025GettyWith a vast amount of experience spread across the quarterback room, with 18-year veteran Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, who won the championship last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, there are also two rookies in Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. It is Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion, who has occupied most of the headlines, though, having been initially projected as a top first-round pick, but then sliding all the way down to the Browns in the fifth-round.Browns GM says Sanders’ speeding violations were ‘not smart’Scrutiny around the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback was exacerbated in June when he received two speeding violations for driving over the speed limit.Sanders was heavily criticized in the wake of those misdemeanors, with Browns general manager Andrew Berry giving his two cents earlier this week.“Not smart, just not smart, and it’s something that we’ve addressed with him,” Berry said. “He understands the implications, he understands the consequences. I think the thing is it’s not just about yourself. “It’s not just about having a joy ride. It’s not just about driving a car really fast, but it’s about the fact that you can endanger other people. It’s about the fact that if a deer or someone cuts out in front of you, like your reaction time.“It’s just dangerous and it’s not something that we want our guys to be doing. It’s not something that they should be doing. And the No. 1 reason is because we don’t want some type of catastrophic accident.“We saw that two years ago when, what was it, Dallas or Houston with a player, and in that incident everybody was lucky to walk away. We don’t want that occurring with anyone in our organization.”Sanders responds in the best way possible after a mixed training camp so farWith all eyes on the 144th overall pick, Sanders’ first few days in Browns training camp yielded mixed results. The 23-year-old left fans worried with his throwing technique, after he completed just three of his eight passes on the first day, none of which went for a touchdown. Since then, Sanders has appeared to have grown in confidence, firing on all cylinders and responding to doubters in the best way possible. On day four, according to ESPN Cleveland, Sanders completed eight of his 11 pass attempts for three touchdowns in team drills. One of these touchdowns was a 32-yard dart to 2025 undrafted free-agent Luke Floriea.  For context, on day four Pickett went six-for-10 for two touchdowns, while Gabriel completed just eight of his 15 pass attempts for one touchdown. Meanwhile, Flacco attempted just eight throws, of which he completed four for no touchdowns. One of Sanders’ other touchdowns was to Diontae Johnson, which was posted to the official Cleveland Browns X account (formerly Twitter) which prompted some reaction online. “The RIGHT move from the Browns is to let Shedeur Sanders start from day 1,” The Wrightway Sports Network posted.  Sanders struggled with his passing on day one of training camp, but impressed on day fourGettyNFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“That connection with Thrash in the red zone isn’t just a practice throw – it’s Sanders showing poise under pressure and finding chemistry with another rookie when it counts. Two young players building trust while others debate reps,” one fan wrote.“Feet work and placement of the football and leading his WRs. Man these scouts on him should be fired!” another fan chimed in. However, Sanders is the only Browns quarterback who has not been taking reps with the first-team offence in the offseason workout program and in the first training camp practices. The situation has led Sanders to an unconventional way of putting in more work — throwing to equipment staffers.Speaking to the media on Day 3 of Browns training camp, Sanders gave a long-winded and honest answer when asked about his lack of experience with the first-team offense. JJ Watt hits out at training camp statsThough Sanders’ performances so far have not gone unnoticed, and steadily begun to impress, former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt has hit out at training camp stats as a whole, calling them ‘insane and ridiculous.’“Training Camp “stats” are insane and ridiculous,” said the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.“[I] used to think it was always just people joking, but now seeing them seriously reported. You have no idea what the purpose of that period is, what the goals are, what the context is, etc.”Former NFL star J.J. Watt has hit out at training camp “stats”Getty“It could be a strictly 3rd & Long blitz period where every play is skewed to the defenses advantage. Coaches could be asking the QB to focus specifically on one route concept. DLine may be focusing only on bull rushes one day or just speed rushes for one period.”“More importantly, practice is for practicing. You’re supposed to fail. You’re supposed to try new things, see what works and what doesn’t work, etc. If you only do what works, you’ll never grow, adapt, change.”“The entire point of training camp is to build and grow towards the season so that you perform your best when the real games start.”View Tweet: https://twitter.com/hashtag/Browns?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwStay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
