Karnataka rain: Flood alerts issued to regions downstream of Krishnarajasagar, Tungabhadra reservoirs

(File Photo)Several low-lying areas in Karnataka, downstream of major reservoirs, are reeling under flood threat, as heavy rain is expected to continue, especially in the coastal and Malnad districts, in the coming week.The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) on Sunday issued flood warnings to regions downstream of Krishnarajasagar and Tungabhadra reservoirs. The dams were receiving high inflows due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Cauvery and Tungabhadra rivers. Of the two, the regions downstream of the Tungabhadra reservoir faced a larger threat as an outflow ranging from 90,000 to 1.4 lakh cusecs is anticipated from the Tungabhadra dam.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an orange alert to coastal and Malnad districts for the next two days, while Bengaluru and surrounding regions were issued a yellow alert for the period.The intensity of rain is expected to subside during the week.Low-lying areas adjacent to rivers and their tributaries faced a threat due to the continuous downpour.Several minor landslides were reported over the past two days, especially in the Malnad districts. Among the regions facing the risk of inundation are parts of Kodagu, Mysuru, and Bellary districts. Access to a couple of remote villages in the Kodagu district was cut off as water entered several households.As per KSNDMC data, the state has received normal rainfall in the current monsoon season, starting June 1, while the overall rain recorded was 439 mm, compared to a normal of 427 mm — an excess of three per cent, as on July 26.Story continues below this adThe current spell has also addressed the rainfall deficit recorded in the western parts of North and South Interior Karnataka.
