(Express photo by Akash Patil)After a week of heavy showers lashing Mumbai, rain activity is slated to subside in the coming week with no alerts sounded in the city.While a yellow alert will remain in place on Sunday, the intensity is forecast to recede to ‘moderate’ from Monday in Mumbai, Thane as well as Palghar districts thereafter.After reeling under a rain soaked week, the city woke up to moderate showers on Saturday morning. Data from the India Meteorological Department showed that its (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded 97mm rain and the Colaba station received 17mm rain between Friday and 8.30 am on Saturday.According to the civic automatic weather stations, the heaviest rain was recorded in the eastern suburbs at an average of 89.44 mm rain, followed by 81.42 mm rain in the western suburbs and 29 mm rain in the island city division.Since the resurgence of rain activity since Monday, the Santacruz station finally surpassed the rain deficit by logging a surplus of 25mm by Saturday morning.According to records, the Santacruz station in suburbs has now received 1,274 mm rain since June, which is a positive departure of 25mm from the actual normal average for the period. However, the Colaba observatory is still languishing under a rain deficit of 217 mm rain, despite having received above normal rainfall in May and June.Meanwhile, even as Mumbai and its neighbouring districts remained under an orange alert throughout Saturday owing to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain, the intensity of rainfall subdued during the day. Between 8.30am and 5.30pm, the Santacruz station received 3.7 mm rain and Colaba recorded 1.2 mm rainfall.Story continues below this adAccording to the IMD, the intensity of showers is slated to recede gradually in the coming week. While Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar have been placed under a downgraded ‘yellow’ alert on Sunday amid possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets, no alerts have been issued from Monday. So far, the Santacruz station has received 762 mm rain in July while Colaba station received 349mm rain this month.
