Shedeur Sanders emphatically responds after $8.5bn Browns owner distanced himself from rookie QB

Wait 5 sec.

When Shedeur Sanders’ NFL Draft slide came to an abrupt halt in the fifth round, many believed Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam pulled the trigger.Adding a second rookie quarterback to a room that already included third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and the ghost of Deshaun Watson‘s $230 million contract goes against consensus on the best way to build a team.Shedeur is trying to do his talking on the fieldGettyThe feeling was that general manager Andrew Berry had his hand forced, leaving head coach Kevin Stefanski to try his best and find a way to make it work. But speaking at Browns training camp, Haslam took a break from negotiations over a $2.4 billion stadium to insist that Berry was the one who made the call.“Listen. We have good process,” Haslam, who is worth a reported $8.5 billion, said is his annual media briefing alongside his wife, Dee.“If you’d have told me Friday night (Day 2) driving home, y’all are going to pick Shedeur, I would have said, ‘That’s not happening.’ “But, we had a conversation early that morning and we had a conversation later that day. I think we had the right people involved in the conversation.“At the end of the day, that’s Andrew Berry’s call. Andrew made the call to pick Shedeur.”When did Jimmy Haslam buy the Browns? The Haslams bought the dysfunctional franchise in 2012 and have done little to shake a malaise that dates back to the 1960s and controversial former owner Art Modell.Jimmy took it all in stride when asked what he had learned.“It doesn’t look like very much,” he joked.Shedeur came into the NFL with questions over his professionalism, which mainly arose from mysterious unnamed sources in the pre-Draft media frenzy. The quarterback has been impressing in limited opportunitiesGettyHaslam is hoping to take the team out of Cleveland city centerGettyBut Haslam has been impressed with his young quarterback.“I’ll say this, for the two quarterbacks coming in, and I know everybody has a vision of Shedeur,” he said. “But he’s come in the building, worked hard, kept his head down and done what he’s supposed to do as has Dillon, which is no surprise for either of them.”Shedeur Sanders’ training camp statsAside from a couple of speeding infractions, which led to a rap from Berry, Sanders has gone about his business well.He got his first reps against the first-team defense with the second-team offense on Wednesday and went 2 for 3 against one of the NFL’s better units, having impressed by going 9 for 9 with 2 TDs on the first day in pads.Sanders has been relegated to throwing to ‘equipment guys’ at times due to his place at the bottom of a four-man depth chart.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? But Kenny Pickett’s hamstring injury has opened the door and the former Colorado Buffaloes passer has made the most of his chances.Per Bet MGM, Sanders’ stats through the first week of camp have been outstanding with 42 of 60 passes completed for five touchdowns and zero interceptions. His Hall of Fame dad Deion has been battling bladder cancer while the prospect was preparing for life as a pro.During an emotional chat, Deion told former teammate Michael Irvin that Shedeur gave him a clear, six-word message: “When preseason comes, watch me work.” The Browns face the Carolina Panthers on August 9 and both Sanders and Gabriel should get plenty of work.Flacco is a 16-year veteran and will more than likely cede most of the snaps to the rookies.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
