Gervonta Davis’ trainer, Kenny Ellis, has dismissed rumours that his fighter is contemplating retirement.Gossip spiralled around social media last week that Davis had been telling close friends he was ‘fed up’ with boxing and intended to hang up his gloves.Ellis (left) has shot down rumours that Davis is retiredEsther Lin/PBCHowever, this was quickly dispelled by Ellis, who took to social media to respond: “Per usual FAKE news.”Retirement talk had surfaced amid Davis’ recent arrest for the alleged assault of his ex-girlfriend and mother of his two children.Davis was taken into custody earlier this month in South Florida, but was released on $10,000 (£7,400) bond, with a court hearing scheduled for August 12.A couple of days later, reports emerged that Davis’ upcoming rematch with Lamont Roach had been pushed for a third time. The initial plan was to hold the fight on June 21 at the T-Mobile Arena, but promoter Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) delayed the fight until August 16 before rescheduling it again.According to Ring Magazine, organisers have now shifted their attention to August 23 or August 30 in Sin City.Meanwhile, Roach has come out and declared that he doesn’t think the sequel will happen full stop. When they met for the first time in March, Davis was held to a contentious majority draw by the heavy underdog. In the ninth round, Roach was wrongfully denied a knockdown that would have otherwise handed him the win and the WBA lightweight title.A grazing jab sent Davis down onto one knee, and while referee Steve Willis initially administered a count, he quickly broke it off when he realised the touch down had resulted from some debris getting into ‘Tank’s’ eye.Davis hasn’t fought since his heavily disputed draw with Roach in MarchGettyTeam Roach went on to lodge an appeal with the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).But the result was upheld as the commission declared the referee’s call was not ‘outcome determinative’ as there were three full rounds after the incident. The NYSAC did, however, admit that Ellis had made the wrong call.As the dust settled, it emerged that the draw had derailed a fight between Jake Paul and Davis that was in the works for November.Paul has since pivoted towards a crossover clash with two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.Nakisa Bidarian, Paul’s manager, claims the fight is in the works for the first quarter of 2026, with Wembley Stadium earmarked as a possible venue.
