One casino player went from hero to zero in Iowa earlier this month, winning over $1,500 in the casino only to be arrested before he could claim his prize.Luis Miguel Mejia was at Elite Casino Resorts in the Midwestern State on Sunday 13th July, celebrating winning $1,517.40 on the slot machines but was arrested as he was trying to retrieve his winnings. As is protocol, the lucky casino player was made to verify his ID to be able to receive his large amount of winnings, and in doing so, announced himself to be a wanted man in Iowa for Class D felony charges.Iowa state laws state that any wins of $1,200 or more at a casino will require a member of staff to verify the win and the identity of the player, though it’s been reported that the threshold is to be increased to $2,000 in the new year.Law officers of the state had announced that Mejia had tried to get a friend to quickly switch places with him at the slot machines as the winnings were announced, though the casino staff had noticed the swap take place. The subsequent court hearing announced the warrant for Mejia’s arrest on 22nd July after it had become apparent that Mejia had carried out two Class D felony crimes a fortnight prior, as well as having no Social Security number.Iowa court documentation showed that he was charged with driving a car with no license and speeding, as well as other previous gambling offences and conspiracy to commit a ‘non forcible felony’.According to law firm McCarthy & Hamrock each offense will carry a penalty of up to five years in prison – plus also carry a $7,500 fine.Commercial content notice: Taking one of the bookmaker offers featured in this article may result in a payment to talkSPORT. 18+.
