Momentum has voiced its strong support for the introduction of random drug and alcohol testing for motorists in Malta, without the requirement of reasonable suspicion, following a call by top medical professionals from the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital.In a firm statement, Momentum described the measure as “not just necessary, but long overdue.” The group pointed to the rising toll of road-related tragedies in Malta, stressing the urgent need for action.“Too many lives have been shattered, too many families left broken, and too many near-misses ignored. Road safety in Malta cannot wait for another tragedy,” the statement read.Momentum emphasised that random roadside testing is a preventive tool, not a punitive one, aligning with international best practices that have proven effective in reducing road fatalities.“Drinking or taking drugs before driving is not a ‘personal choice’, it’s a public threat,” the statement continued. “Random testing serves as a deterrent and a means to protect innocent lives.”Matthew Agius, speaking on behalf of Momentum, welcomed the growing support among healthcare professionals, citizens, and civil society but stressed the need for concrete legislative action:“Awareness without action is meaningless.
