Travis Henry’s career had many twists and turns. The former Buffalo Bills star running back looked like one of the best tailbacks in the early 2000s.Henry was a star for the Bills for four seasonsGettyHe played in Buffalo from 2001-2004 after being drafted by the Western New York franchise in the second round in the 2001 draft out of the University of Tennessee.Henry’s career year came in 2002 when he rushed for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns. He made his only Pro Bowl appearance that year. However, as fast as Henry soared to the top, he came crashing down in unfortunate fashion.Henry demanded a trade after the 2004 injury-plagued season that saw him lose his starting role, and so the Bills traded him to the Tennessee Titans. He lasted two seasons in Tennessee before signing with the Denver Broncos to a five-year $22.5 million contract. Henry’s time in Denver was mostly remembered for off the field incidents. He had reportedly failed a drug test that he appealed and took to Federal court, allowing him to play while a decision was made.Henry released a statement, promising to clean up his act for Denver.“I want to make it right to the Broncos, the fans and myself,” Henry said.“I want to be a Bronco and make it all right. I don’t want to be anywhere else. I owe those people something for all that happened last year. I want to clear my name there. I’m so hungry to do right there.”He was suspended for one year for testing positive for marijuana, which led to his eventual departure from the league entirely.Henry lasted seven seasons in the NFLGettyHenry was set to be a future star before injuries and legal troubles caught up with himGettyAt the time, then Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan released a blunt statement, calling out Henry and his actions.“We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team,” Shanahan said.“He’s just too inconsistent as a person. I’m not going to get into details what he did do or didn’t do. If you don’t do the little things, obviously you can’t count on somebody. So that’s why he’s released.”In 2022, a report in the New York Times quoted Henry as having fathered nine children, while later reports claimed it may have been as many as 11.He was obligated to pay at least $170,000 in child payments per year, an amount he could not afford to pay having been arrested in 2009 for failing to pay child support.“I’ve lost everything in this mess I’ve gotten myself into,” Henry said. In 2012 he was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell but did not make a return to the league having played his last game during the 2007 season.
