Calvin Ramsay will have been made fully aware of his chances at Liverpool after the decision to hand Hugo Ekitike his squad number as part of Friday’s kit launch.If it wasn’t already clear, Ramsay will not be considered by Arne Slot as part of his first-team squad in the future.The 22-year-old returned for pre-season at Liverpool as part of the U21s squad and has featured in a number of warmup friendlies under new head coach Rob Page.Now considered over-age within academy football, Ramsay has been given a stark reminder of his senior prospects at Liverpool.Friday’s Adidas kit launch saw new striker Ekitike confirmed to have taken the No. 22 shirt, which has been held by Ramsay since his move from Aberdeen in 2022.Ramsay has instead moved to the No. 47 and the decision to strip him of his previous squad number signals his role moving forward.Liverpool will consider offers for the right-back this summer and it is likely he departs on another loan spell, with a shortage of permanent suitors expected.It will be of paramount importance for Ramsay’s representatives, in accordance with the club’s loan pathways team, to identify the right next step for him after barely playing football in the last three years.He has taken in four difficult spells on loan in the past two seasons, struggling for game time at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock.That has been due to a combination of injuries and, more recently, simply a competition for places which often saw him left out of matchday squad.The Scotland international is understood to have missed out on homegrown eligibility for the Premier League after leaving the parameters of the English FA to spend the second half of last season with Kilmarnock.Now 22 and required to be registered as a senior player, that will not have aided his already unlikely chances of a squad role under Slot.Unfortunately it also damages his opportunities elsewhere, with it more feasible that he now returns to his native Scotland, where he enjoyed a blossoming reputation as a youngster.Liverpool signed Ramsay in a deal worth up to £6.5 million, with then-manager Jurgen Klopp saying there was “lots to like” about his profile.A number of serious and niggling injuries blighted his chances of a breakthrough, and his last appearance for the Reds’ first team was in November 2022.
