Of 132 trucks, only 37 safely reached their destinations for distribution to civilians in the Strip.By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel NewsMost aid trucks entering the Gaza Strip from Egypt on Sunday were looted before reaching the storerooms from which international organizations could distribute the goods to civilians in need, Al-Araby al-Jadeed reported Monday.A confidential source told the Qatari-owned newspaper based in the UK that “a large portion of the aid never reached the distribution warehouses and was stolen and sold in the markets.”“Out of 130 trucks that entered the Kerem Shalom crossing yesterday, only 37 were actually received by the Egyptian Committee and the Palestinian Red Crescent,” the source said.Twenty of the trucks were allegedly told to return to Egypt by Israel “without any official explanation” as to why, the paper said. The other 73 trucks were stopped in the area of the IDF-controlled Morag Corridor between Rafah and Khan Yunis, and “unknown groups” forcibly emptied the trucks of “food baskets, flour and personal care items,” which then “appeared the next morning in local markets in Gaza, where they were openly sold to Palestinians,” the source noted. The convoy was the first one Israel allowed in from the Egyptian-Gazan border crossing at Rafah in more than a year, as Jerusalem bowed to international pressure to expand aid delivery to the Strip.Since March, Israel had been trying to limit aid delivery at least in southern Gaza to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an organization that prevented Hamas operatives from stealing it for themselves or selling it at enormous profit, providing it with the means to carry on the war.The Al-Araby media outlet quoted a Hamas official on Monday claiming that “criminal gangs and thieves” who are under Israel’s “direct protection” are to blame for the looting. While Hamas and much of the international community have continually blamed Israel for “starving Gazans” by not allowing food into the Strip, the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories told Yahoo News on Thursday that it is not Israel’s fault that the Gazans are suffering.“The State of Israel allows the entry of humanitarian aid beyond the standards of international law, without restriction,” said Col. Abdullah Halabi. “As long as the international community makes an effort to bring in the aid, we will allow them to bring it in.”On Saturday night, the government declared that it would even stop all air and ground attacks in three areas of the Strip between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. each day in order to facilitate aid delivery – Gaza City, Deir al-Balah and the al-Muwasi safe zone. These are where most of the Gazan population now resides, and it is assumed that this is also where the majority of Hamas’ remaining armed forces are hiding among their civilian human shields. The post Most aid trucks from Egypt looted before reaching Gazan warehouses – report appeared first on World Israel News.
