(Express Photo)A woman, who is a co-accused and a friend of a school teacher arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student last month, surrendered before the Mumbai police Tuesday.A senior officer said it was earlier believed the woman, who allegedly helped the teacher in the crime, had left the country; however, a police probe revealed that she was in West Bengal. “Earlier this week, our team detained her in West Bengal. She was, however, granted bail by a local court on the condition that she would surrender before the Mumbai police,” the officer said.Also read | Woman teacher arrested for obscene video chat with Class 10 student in Navi MumbaiThe officer added that the co-accused surrendered Monday, following which she was produced before a court Tuesday, which sent her to police custody for two days.The Mumbai police arrested the 40-year-old teacher of a prominent school in the city on June 29, and booked her on charges, including those under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.A First Information Report (FIR) was registered in June after the boy’s mother saw a change in his behaviour and questioned him. The police said the teacher and the student had gone to hotels where the boy was sexually assaulted since January last year.During the probe, the police said the role of the teacher’s friend had come to the fore, following which she had been named as a co-accused in the FIR. The teacher’s friend had allegedly acted as an intermediary between the teacher and the student.A local court granted bail to the teacher on July 22.
