Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall has accused opposition parties of making outlandish campaign promises they never intend to keep and branding their pledges as deceptive tricks aimed at manipulating the electorate.Speaking during his regular Tuesday night commentary, Nandlall said the opposition has neither the record nor the capacity to deliver on the ambitious proposals now being marketed as part of their election campaigns.“They know they’re not going to be in government, so they promise everything under the sun,” Nandlall stated. “They won’t have to deliver, and history shows they never do.”As the campaign season heats up ahead of Guyana’s upcoming general elections, the Attorney General said voters are being bombarded with promises of free house lots, expanded school feeding programmesa nd large-scale cash grants — all of which he dismissed as unrealistic and unsustainable. He pointed specifically to one presidential candidate promising a free house lot for every citizen turning 18, calling it “a credit card trick” with no plan for funding or implementation.“They [APNU/AFC] were in office from 2015 to 2020 and didn’t develop a single housing scheme,” Nandlall reminded. “They handed out 7,000 lots that were leftover from PPP/C schemes and most went to their friends and family.”Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall (Photo: Attorney General’s Chambers Facebook page)In contrast, he highlighted the PPP/C’s own record, noting that in just five years the government has distributed 50,000 house lots, with the 50,000th title handed over just last week.He also lambasted the opposition for now pledging school cash grants and free meals, which he said they actively dismantled during their last term.“They abolished the cash grant, the school feeding and uniform programmes. Now they’re back, promising what they themselves destroyed.”Nandlall argued that the opposition is making “grand and fanciful” promises only because they know they won’t be elected. According to him, their focus is not on nation-building, job creation, or macroeconomic stability, but rather “whimsical, ridiculous” pledges aimed at winning votes by deception. He said the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), by contrast, has maintained a reputation for delivering on promises.“We will never make promises we can’t fulfil,” he said, noting that the party’s track record has earned it the trust of the electorate. The Attorney General also took aim at comments made by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, whom he accused of disrespecting Guyanese voters.“Norton says a large percentage of the population is illiterate — maybe that’s why he believes he can tell people anything and they’ll believe it.”Nandlall warned that the opposition is already laying the groundwork to cry foul when the votes are counted in September.“When the people reject them, they’ll say they were robbed, blame the voters list, and blame the PPP,” he said. “They’ll blame everything except their lack of a credible plan.”As election day nears, Nandlall called on voters to reflect on the past and demand accountability.“You can’t copy PPP programmes, raise the numbers, and call it a plan. There’s no originality, no credibility, just empty promises and political theatre,” he concluded. The post ‘Opposition promises are just tricks’ – Nandlall says voters must remember the past appeared first on News Room Guyana.
