Samsung’s Galaxy Watches could soon meet an unlikely rival

Samsung might be a force to reckon with in the smartwatch segment, but it could soon meet an unlikely rival. Reports indicate that Facebook's parent firm, Meta, has revived its plans to launch a smartwatch. It will solidify Meta's position in the wearable space with its existing devices like smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets.According to a report from DigiTimes, Meta's smartwatch will feature a camera. The device is aimed to complement its smart glasses, such as the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, and mixed-reality headsets like the Meta Quest 3. This sounds similar to Meta's plans back in 2021 when it was working on a smartwatch with a 12MP primary camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. The current smartwatch that is being developed by the company will focus on examining the world around the user rather than their health and fitness. Meta is reportedly planning to enhance the user experience in the metaverse (virtual digital world) with its upcoming smartwatch. Its development seems to have started in early 2024, and it could be displayed at the Meta Connect 2025 event, which is its annual developers’ conference, on 17 September this year. The company has already invested heavily in the AR and XR spaces. It is the market leader in the communications and social media segments, so AR and XR spaces complement the company very well. Meta reportedly has plans to launch at least half a dozen AI-equipped wearable devices this year. Samsung's Galaxy Watches are aimed at fitness, health, and deep integration with smartphones and other smart home devices. So, Meta and Samsung are aiming at two different things, but could still affect each other’s sales potential. Moreover, Samsung is planning to launch its first XR headset before the end of this year, and that could affect the sales of Meta Quest headsets. The post Samsung’s Galaxy Watches could soon meet an unlikely rival appeared first on SamMobile.
