Van Gogh had a close relationship with his younger brother, Theo, who often provided him with financial support as he pursued his painting.Considered one of the most influential artists in history, van Gogh was virtually unknown during his lifetime. Van Gogh suffered from frequent bouts of mental illness, ultimately taking his own life at the age of 37. His brother, who had been suffering from syphilis and poor health, died shortly after. The brothers were buried together in Auvers-sur-Oise.
