The non-stop rain and wind on Saturday (July 26, 2025), which continued through the night and into Sunday (July 27, 2025) morning, caused some tension in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. However, the weather subsided by mid-forenoon, resulting in pleasant conditions for the rest of the day.Earlier in the morning, the water level in the Kakkayam reservoir rose to 2,487 feet, well above the red alert level, prompting officials to raise two of its shutters by half a foot to discharge excess water. A warning was issued to people living along the banks of the Kuttiadi river to remain alert, as the release of excess water from the reservoir could lead to a rise in the river’s water level. The heavy rain during the night led to waterlogging in several parts of Koyilandy municipality. A rehabilitation camp was opened at the Government LP School in Panthalayani for three families comprising four men and five women. Two houses were completely damaged, while 41 others were partially damaged in the rain that lashed the area on Saturday and Sunday morning.Several rivers in Wayanad are overflowing following continuous rain over the past two days. The water level in the Valliyoorkavu river has risen considerably, partially submerging the Panamaram–Mananthavady road. A minor landslip at Makkimala has muddied the water in Thalappuzha. The water level has also risen in the Kalindi river near Thirunelli. As many as 10 families have been relocated to safer places.Traffic on National Highway 766 was disrupted at several points as trees uprooted in the strong winds fell across the road. The rising water level in the Banasurasagar reservoir led to three of its shutters being opened by 85 centimetres, releasing excess water through Karumanthodu.Published - July 27, 2025 11:20 pm IST
