NASCAR's inagural In Season Challenge comes down to this

Wait 5 sec.

NASCAR’s inaugural ‘In Season Challenge’ will end in a Ty.It comes down to ultimate underdog story Ty Dillon, still mired 30th in the championship standings amidst a generally challenging season, having advanced to the finals through a series of head-to-head match-ups over the past month just one upset over Ty Gibbs away from a million-dollar payout. As for Gibbs, it’s not exactly like he is a behemoth to be overcome either, as the third year Joe Gibbs Racing driver is 16th in the overall standings in a season that could be described as a disappointment compared to the expectations as well. But over the course of Atlanta, Chicago, Sonoma and Dover, they advanced through their series of head-to-head match-ups to make the finals on Sunday in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For Dillon, this is the championship for their Kaulig Racing No. 10 team. They still intend to grow as a pairing but this is the biggest race of the year for them in a season that otherwise is about building a foundation.“What I think I appreciate the most is that the In-Season Challenge has allowed us to get a little bit of light for that growth,” Dillon said. “I’ve talked about that a lot and we’ve had the recipe to success with our speed and more speed than I’ve ever had in a Cup car and we just didn’t execute the races.“And now, due to the tournament, people have gotten to see the moments where we’ve executed now five weeks in a row.”Gibbs is the favorite but has said repeatedly that he is just treating this as any other race. He still has realistic playoff aspirations and is in a car capable of winning races. This weekend is just part and parcel to the bigger picture goal.“It is what it is,” Gibbs said. “Like I said, our main focus for me is to go and win races, and my team is the same thing. That’s more important to me than this is, but it’s still very cool to be in this position, and congratulations to him for making this far as well. It is a super cool thing, and that is a lot of money as well. Maybe that can go to help people out. It is super cool to be in this position.”But again, this week to him, unlike Dillon, is not about the In Season Challenge.“Yeah, for us, it is just another race,” Gibbs said. “Especially, we want to go win. The same preparation as all of them are – just go forward from there.”Even more telling about how much this means to both is illustrated on what they would do to the other. Dillon moved Alex Bowman out of the way on the final lap of Sonoma to advance that week. What would he do this week?“Ask Alex Bowman.”And Gibbs?“I don’t know,” Gibbs said. “Hopefully, we are not bumper to bumper and hopefully we are going for the win. Maybe we are both going for the win. I don’t know.”Dillon knows because this is his championship.“The conversation about him has been very minimal for us and that's been the process week and week out for us,” Dillon said. “It's been about, we truly believe as a race team and that's why we've built so much confidence if we execute our race and do the best to our abilities, no mistakes out, execute everybody in the field.“We might not have the most speed to win the race, but we're gonna do plenty to put pressure on them. You know what they say about pressure, it creates diamonds, it'll crack your pipes.“So that’s what we want to do to him  -- put as much pressure on him as possible and see how they handle it. It's worked out to this point. We're gonna worry about our race. Hopefully he massively underestimates us and hopefully be there at the end to take advantage of it.”
