Prime Minister Mark Phillips has credited the growing diversity within the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to the inclusionary policies and programmes implemented by the government since taking office in 2020.“All our policies are colour blind. When we make and implement a policy, it is for all Guyanese. We don’t care about your race,” the Prime Minister told thousands of PPP/C supporters at its rally at Anna Regina in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region (Region 2).“This is a lovely mix. When I look at this gathering, I see Guyanese of all races – I see Indian Guyanese, African Guyanese, Portuguese, Amerindian, Europeans, Chinese, and even mixed Guyanese – all of us as One Guyana supporting the PPP/C,” he said.Supporters at the PPP/C’s election rally at Anna Regina (Photo: July 26, 2025)The PPP/C has historically enjoyed the support of Indo-Guyanese, while the main opposition People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) has been supported overwhelmingly by Afro-Guyanese.Recent trends, however, show that the PPP/C has made significant gains in opposition strongholds such as New Amsterdam in Region Six and Linden in Region Ten.At the heart of this shift, the Prime Minister believes, is the “One Guyana” concept introduced by President Irfaan Ali upon his assumption of office in 2020.“The President came up with the concept of ‘One Guyana,’ and it features in all his policies. All Guyanese have benefitted and will continue to benefit from the projects and policies implemented by Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C government,” he assured residents of Region Two.PM Phillips referenced education, highlighting specifically the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) programme and the University of Guyana (UG), which was made tuition-free this year.He explained that when the 39,000 scholarships were awarded through GOAL, and when UG was made tuition-free, it was to the benefit of all Guyanese – regardless of their race.In the housing sector, he pointed to the fact that Afro-Guyanese – who were “forgotten” by the previous PNCR-led government – have benefitted equally from house lots.Figures released by the Ministry of Housing and Water last year indicate that of all allocations made from 2020 to 2024, 45.9% were to Afro-Guyanese, 46.7% to Indo-Guyanese, and approximately 8% to persons of other ethnicities. The Prime Minister also used the opportunity to warn Afro-Guyanese about the race-baiting tactics of the opposition and urged them to reject such rhetoric.“…the opposition is starting to raise the bogeyman of race. When they were in power, they did nothing for African Guyanese,” he said, referencing the fact that the disciplined services – which comprise a majority of Afro-Guyanese – had their bonuses taken away by the opposition when it was in government.“So, when they come asking for your vote, you must reject them,” he urged.General elections are slated for 1 September 2025.The post ‘All of our policies are colour blind’ – PM Phillips on PPP’s inclusive development agenda appeared first on News Room Guyana.
