President Dr Irfaan Ali on Saturday evening outlined a list of plans to develop Region Two (Pomeroon–Supenaam) and link the region to surrounding coastal and hinterland areas during his second term in office.Speaking at the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) rally at Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast, he told supporters that a medical school would be built in the region, adding to the training opportunities already available through the Government’s scholarship and online academy programmes.“You are voting so your children can be doctors right here in Essequibo,” he noted. Also among the plans for the development of human resources in the region is the opening of a Faculty of Engineering under the University of Guyana.President Dr. Irfaan Ali addressing the PPP/C’s election rally at Anna Regina (Photo: News Room/ Vishani Ragobeer/ July 26, 2025)The President said more than 4,000 scholarships have already been awarded to citizens of the region.Rice farming is one of the major forms of economic activity in Region Two.Recalling utterances by the previous APNU+AFC government that rice “is a private business” and therefore does not require government support, the President assured rice farmers that the PPP/C will not leave them behind.“We will ensure that rice is successful and profitable here in Essequibo and everywhere else. You can be assured, if a subsidy is needed, so be it. You will get it under the PPP government,” he committed.Plans for the sector include building a fertiliser plant using investments from the Government and private investors, and co-investing in a price stabilisation fund to ensure farmers are not entirely dependent on market demand and supply.Supporters at the PPP/C’s election rally at Anna Regina (Photo: July 26, 2025)The fund, the President said, “will feed into a payment mechanism to allow you to get paid by the end of the crop so you don’t have to wait two to three crops to get paid… so that you can farm with dignity and pride. That is the goal of your PPP/C.”In addition, he committed to opening new lands and reducing the overhead cost of cultivation.Beyond education and agriculture, Dr Ali pointed to further investments planned to expand the housing sector, remove taxes on All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and outboard engines up to 150 horsepower used by riverain communities, expand the forestry sector, develop the cocoa and coconut industries, construct a four-lane road along the Essequibo Coast, and provide a third ferry to service the Parika to Supenaam route.“This is how we empower people, by making assets more available… not by dishonouring them, believing they can be bought or sold,” he noted.“This is no slack ‘buckta’ policy – this is real policy, real progress, real development,” he added. In addition to the ferry service, the President said his government will more efficiently integrate neighbouring Regions – One, Three and Seven – with the Essequibo Coast.“It means you have a larger market for your products. It means that Essequibo will be more accessible to consumers,” he said.Ali also spoke of increasing security in communities with more street lights and CCTV cameras, upskilling Community Support Officers, and other measures which will improve the lives of residents in the region.“We need to do what we started – and do even more,” he noted. The post Medical school, new port at Charity with cold storage facility, among plans for Region Two – President Ali appeared first on News Room Guyana.
