It’s that time of the summer, when the Madden player ratings are released and people get upset.Shedeur Sanders – currently rated fourth on the Cleveland Browns depth chart – received a 67 overall rating.Sanders has impressed in campGettyCam Ward went first overall back in April’s NFL Draft and received a 72 to top this year’s rookie class in the ratings.Sanders — taken 144th in the fifth round and handpicked by GM Andrew Berry, not owner Jimmy Haslam as he pointed out Tuesday — has yet to react to his 67.What’s interesting to note is that teammate and fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was given a 66.Gabriel was taken in the third round with the 94th overall pick, exactly 50 spots ahead of Sanders, yet is rated a point below and has been placed third on the depth chart in Cleveland.Madden Rookie RatingsThe top five rated rookie quarterbacks are Ward (72), Jaxson Dart (68), Tyler Shough (68), Sanders (67) and Gabriel (66). The highest rated overall rookies are Travis Hunter (84), Ashton Jeanty (83), Abdul Carter (81) and Mason Graham (80).Fans seem to be split with Sanders’ rating, either arguing it’s much too high or much too low.“Compared to Cam Ward being a 72 I’d say he’s alright at 67,” one fan commented on X.“He is not a superstar player, after watching him play at CU this is fair. I would maybe go to 70 on him but not any higher,” another added.“That’s way too high,” one more chimed in.Sanders is in the running to be QB1 come SeptemberGettyDefensive end Myles Garrett and Sanders faced one another for the first timeGetty“He’s going to prove everyone wrong this season, that’s absurdly low,” another boldly declared. At the end of the day, Madden rookie ratings in the month of July do not matter at all. What matters is the QB1 competition that is taking place on the shores of Lake Erie. While veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are looking to stave off the two rookies, Sanders and Gabriel.Reports are that Sanders has fared well in the early going at camp, even taking a pivotal step during Wednesday’s practice. The rookie took his first reps against Myles Garrett and the first team defense. He led the second team offense in 11 on 11s against the defensive first unit.He reportedly went 2 for 3 during that team period. Up to this point, it’s clear that Sanders has had more good days than bad days, but he still needs to keep stacking them in the right direction. After all, Sanders is Berry’s guy, not Haslam’s. The owner pulled back the curtain of the selection of Sanders in the 2025 draft while speaking to the media earlier this week. NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“We have good process,” Haslam said, via Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com.“We had a conversation early that morning and then we had a conversation later that day. I think we had the right people involved in the conversation.“And the end of the day, that’s [G.M.] Andrew Berry’s call. Andrew made the call to pick Shedeur.”Does that sound like Haslam is a fan of Sanders? Hard to tell, but he clearly isn’t taking any responsibility in bringing him into the organization. Now, could he have told Berry anytime during the draft that he didn’t want his general manager to draft the son of Deion Sanders? And would Berry have listened?None of that matters now, just like the Madden ratings don’t matter. The only thing that Sanders should be focused on, is the playbook and playing to the best of his ability over the course of the next month. If he does that, his Madden rating may just look a little different when it’s all said and done after this year.
