A few months ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised many when they took Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka with the No. 19 overall pick—especially since they already have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on the roster. But looking back now, it might just be one of the smartest moves the franchise has made.At least, that’s what Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield thinks. On a recent episode of the “New Heights” sports podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, Mayfield was asked about the former Buckeyes standout—and he didn’t hold back.“Emeka Egbuka is an absolute stud and he’s the real deal,” Mayfield said. “You know how you can’t just teach guys leaving the ground to catch the ball? It’s always grounded when he catches it and keeps moving.”Mayfield went on to highlight what makes Egbuka such a valuable piece for the offense.“There’s YAC potential out the wazoo right there, but he’s so damn smart,” Mayfield said. “I mean, he’s willing to block. Willing to do everything we ask him to do. But then, I mean, we can plug and play him at any of the three receiver spots right now. It’s pretty exciting.”📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Even though the Buccaneers took Washington’s Jalen McMillan in the third round last year, general manager Jason Licht clearly saw something special in Egbuka and wasn’t willing to pass on him with a first-round pick this year. So far, training camp is proving that move was the right call. The Buccaneers have a deep and talented receiving corps with Evans, Godwin, McMillan—and now Egbuka. But early reports suggest Egbuka isn’t just another name on the depth chart. He’s ready to make an immediate impact. That’s nothing new for the rookie, who thrived in a crowded wide receiver room at Ohio State and still found ways to stand out.Egbuka spent four years at Ohio State, starting most of the time. He finished up with a national championship and some pretty impressive numbers—205 catches, nearly 2,900 yards, and 24 touchdowns.Egbuka played with some really talented guys at Ohio State — Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson — so it wasn’t easy to stand out. But he did it anyway. Now, in Tampa Bay, he’s around a lot of veteran players, and he’s already proving he belongs with them.
