FOOD SECURITY SNAPSHOTAbove‑average first paddy output estimated in 2025Below‑average paddy production in 2024Near-record wheat import requirements forecast in 2025/26Above‑average first paddy output estimated in 2025Harvesting of the 2025 main first paddy crop was finalized last March, with output estimated to have recovered from last year’s weather reduced level. Sowings are estimated above the average, supported by high domestic prices of rice at planting time and government assistance, including fertilizer subsidies. The rainy season, which extends from November to March, was characterized by average to above‑average cumulative rainfall amounts and a generally favourable spatial and temporal distribution, supporting crop development in most parts of the country. Some localized crop losses occurred in eastern, north-eastern and central parts of the country due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains last December and January. Planting of the 2025 mostly irrigated second paddy crop, finalized last May. Crops are currently at vegetative and flowering stages, and remote sensing data as of mid‑June 2025 indicated satisfactory vegetation conditions across the country (ASI map), supported by adequate availability of irrigation water in major reservoirs. Planting of the 2025 third paddy crop, is expected to start next August. The aggregate 2025 paddy production is preliminary forecast at 55.6 million tonnes, slightly above the average.Harvesting of the 2025 main maize crop, accounting for about 70 percent of annual output, finalized last March and production is estimated at an above‑average level. The favourable outcome reflects above‑average sowings, driven by strong domestic demand by the feed industry, and bumper yields due to favourable weather conditions. Harvesting of the 2025 off‑season maize crop is expected to start from late July and production prospects are generally favourable. The aggregate 2025 maize output is preliminary forecast at 15.5 million tonnes, about 6 percent above the average.Below‑average paddy production in 2024The 2024 aggregate paddy output is officially estimated at 53.1 million tonnes, below the average, mainly due to reduced output of the first paddycrop, which was affected by dry weather conditions associated with El Niño between November 2023 and May 2024. The 2024 aggregate maize crop output is officially estimated at above average 15.3 million tonnes, as large sowings, driven by the strong demand from the poultry industry, fully offset yield reduction due to dryness.Near‑record wheat import requirements forecast in 2025/26In the 2025/26 marketing year (April/March), import requirements of wheat, accounting for the bulk of the country’s cereal imports, are forecast at near record 11.5 million tonnes, driven by population growth and increasing domestic consumption of wheat‑based food products, due to changes in dietary preferences. Imports of maize are forecast at well above‑average 1.5 million tonnes, reflecting the strong domestic demand by the poultry industry. Imports of rice in the 2025 calendar year are forecast at 1 million tonnes, down 80 percent from import levels in 2024.
