Alongside this initiative, plans are underway to install solar power plants on unused government lands, enclosed institutional campuses, and approximately 90 buildings under the Municipal Corporation. Officials are also identifying large public parking areas that could accommodate shade-based or rooftop solar systems. The Chandigarh Administration is exploring the installation of solar panels over cycle tracks across the city. With rooftop space on government buildings nearly exhausted as solar panels already adorn 6,624 such structures, the administration is now eyeing innovative alternatives to expand solar power generation. As per an official, the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has initiated a detailed study of the city’s 220 km network of cycle tracks. The survey aims to assess the feasibility, efficiency, and visual impact of mounting solar panels above these tracks, possibly through overhead sheds or other structural models. The city’s Chief Architect is closely involved in evaluating design and execution aspects.Alongside this initiative, plans are underway to install solar power plants on unused government lands, enclosed institutional campuses, and approximately 90 buildings under the Municipal Corporation. Officials are also identifying large public parking areas that could accommodate shade-based or rooftop solar systems.Despite the widespread deployment of rooftop solar units on both government and private buildings, the city’s renewable energy targets remain unmet. To bridge the gap, the Administration is expanding its footprint in solar infrastructure. Past projects such as solar plants at Dhanas Lake, IT Park, and waterworks parking have laid the groundwork for these upcoming expansions, said an official of UT.A senior official from the environment department confirmed that proposals for installing solar systems on Municipal Corporation properties have been submitted for approval. The broader goal is ambitious yet clear, Chandigarh aims to meet 100 per cent of its electricity needs through renewable energy sources by the year 2030.
