Nineteen countries in Africa have reported ongoing mpox transmission in the past six weeks; clade 11b reported in West Africa, both clade 1a and clade 1b reported in Central African countries, while clade 1b is reported in East African countries. From 28th June 2025 to 6th July 2025, only Türkiye has reported the detection of a new MPXV sub-clade (one case of mpox due to clade 1a MPXV) and no new countries have reported MPXV for the first time. Overall, a declining epidemic trend in confirmed cases has been observed in recent weeks (Figure 4), largely driven by a decrease in Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, recent trends should be interpreted with caution given likely reporting delays and incomplete testing of suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as resources for the response also dwindle. However, in the recent weeks, three countries have reported growing outbreaks of clad 11b MPXV. These are Guinea, Liberia and Togo in West Africa whose detailed description is provided in the WHO Mpox multicounty external situation report No 55. Thirteen percent of the cases (164 of 1309) are hospitalized, and a total of 3 deaths have been confirmed. There have been 29 outbreaks reported in 2025, compared to 16 outbreaks reported during 2024. Source: United States Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (US CDC) website accessible here. PSSS/EWARS monitors all Acute Fever and Rash cases, ensuring suspected cases are free from measles and rubella through blood testing.COVID-19The global public health risk associated with COVID-19 remains high. For the previous 7 days up to 6th July 2025, globally, 38,829 COVID cases were reported, 6,531 cases more than what was reported the week before. This included 31,640 from South-East Asia, 5,198 from Europe, 1,191 from Americas, no data from Eastern Mediterranean, no data from Africa and ZERO cases from the Western Pacific region. WHO recommends Member States to: 1) maintain multi-source, multi-tiered collaborative surveillance systems for early detection, variant monitoring, and disease burden assessment, 2) ensure continued equitable access to and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines, particularly among high-risk groups, 3) strengthen healthcare delivery systems to ensure high-quality clinical management of COVID-19 and Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC), 4) enhance risk communication and community engagement, and 5) institutionalize national and subnational coordination mechanisms, including those developed during the acute phase of the pandemic, into long-term respiratory disease threat management systems.
