President Irfaan Ali, on Wednesday night, said his government has big plans to give more to part-time workers in his second term in office. The Government introduced its part-time employment programme in 2022 to offer job opportunities and skills training to boost the long-term earning potential of families in rural areas.“Our plan is not to keep you at one level; we don’t want our part-time workers to be at only one level,” he said at a rally at Rose Hall in Berbice.“We want them to graduate to owning businesses and getting into full-time jobs so they can get better,” he told those gathered to support the party’s re-election bid.Region Six is one of the major beneficiaries of the programme, with thousands employed.  Part-time workers perform a range of functions in the communities in which they work. The President who is running for a second term in office, warned against other political parties who are approaching residents with promises to also expand the programme and pay the workers more money.“The thousands of women who never had an opportunity to earn but today are earning on the part-time programme; today they [other parties] come to tell you that they will give you more but don’t forget who started the programme, don’t forget who you can trust to expand the programme and to give you more under the part-time programme,” he told supporters at the public meeting. Most of the beneficiaries of the programme are women, some of them single mothers.Speaking further on women, Dr. Ali said he understands the importance of their contributions to family. Therefore, the government will be working to construct childcare centres in each region.“We cannot let young professionals limit their potential, in every region, we will build childcare friendly centres. We are looking to graduate part-time workers to full-time workers because we are building out these services to support the enhancement of our society and out country,” he highlighted.“We gave you the Because We Care (education) grant without oil and gas. They took away the Because We Care grant with oil and gas” he added.Speaking on Berbice, Dr Ali promised to decentralize all Government services to the Region in addition to investments being made to construct a stadium, increased training for educational and health professionals, co-investing with sugar workers to provide another form of income, completing a four lane highway from New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek, reducing interest rates and taxes, rebuilding the Berbice River bridge and bridging the Corentyne river among other projects.“We have a clear plan of building and transferring wealth to every single household so everyone can have a better standard of living,” he said as he encouraged supporters to go out and vote for the PPP/C on September 01.The post Gov’t has ‘big’ plans to give more to thousands of part-time workers – President appeared first on News Room Guyana.
