Roderick Sciortino died yesterday, five days after he was involved in a poolside fight at the Seabank Resort and Spa in Mellieħa.His cause of death is still being assessed. Sciortino was hospitalised shortly after the fight, but his partner said in court that he had a health condition and was being kept alive on machines.The fight broke out at the poolside area of the hotel on Saturday and police had to be called in.British tourist Liam Joseph Stacey has been charged with causing serious injuries to Sciortino and is pleading not guilty.A British police officer who was on holiday at the resort testified that a group of Maltese people were drinking heavily and acting aggressively towards other guests. At one point, she saw a man throwing sunbeds around and punching people.Another witness said that Stacey punched Sciortino after he slapped him in the face, causing him to fall over his toddler.The Santa Marija Musical Society, Ħal Għaxaq A.D. 1873 paid tribute to Sciortino, describing him as a “supporter, long-time member, and enthusiast of the Feast of the Assumption”.•
