A 30-YEAR-OLD man who was injured in a road accident died allegedly due to lack of timely treatment at a hospital in Meerut, prompting its administration to suspend two junior resident doctors. The move came after a video surfaced online that purportedly showed a doctor sleeping while on duty even as the accident victim lies unattended nearby.The incident took place at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College and Hospital (LLRM). Hospital and district authorities have also set up two inquiry committees to look into the allegations following protests over the conduct of doctors.Sunil, a labourer who was a resident of Hasanpur Kala village, met with an accident on Sunday night, village head Jaggi Pradhan said. He was brought to the emergency ward of LLRM around 12:30 am but died by 8 am on Monday.Family members alleged that doctors and other staff present in the ward were asleep and did not attend to Sunil despite his “critical condition.”The college administration suspended junior resident doctors – Bhupesh Kumar Rai and Aniket – with immediate effect.LLRM Medical College Principal R C Gupta said on Tuesday that a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter.The panel comprises Dr Anupam Verma, Assistant Professor Shashank Jindal and Assistant Professor Kritesh Mishra, and is expected to submit its report within three days.Story continues below this adThe District Magistrate has constituted a separate inquiry committee that includes Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashok Kataria, ADM City Brijesh Singh, and ACMO Dr Praveen Gautam.According to sources, Sunil Kumar was returning to his village, Hasanpur Kalan, when the accident took place. “He had got a lift from someone till Mundali and started walking towards his home, perhaps thinking that someone would drop him. But an unidentified vehicle knocked him down,” his father, Govind, told mediapersons.“Sunil was seriously injured and no one at the hospital gave him medical aid. After a while, an employee said that his leg would be amputated. They had not even taken an X-ray. We kept pleading for treatment but the doctors and staff were negligent,” Gram pradhan Jaggi alleged.In the video, a doctor is purportedly seen sleeping on a chair placed in front of an air-conditioner. Sunil is seen apparently unconscious on the bed. Jaggi alleged that the doctors did not get up even when they were asked to.Story continues below this adFollowing Sunil’s death, Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Dheeraj Raj suspended Dr Bhupesh Kumar Rai and Dr Aniket. Raj also constituted a three-member inquiry committee, which included Superintendent Dr Anupama Verma, Assistant Professor Dr Shashank Jindal and Assistant Professor Dr Kritesh Mishra, to probe the alleged negligence.“We have suspended both the doctors on Monday. Both were on duty. The committee is looking at the allegations of negligence and exploring all the angles that led to the death of the man,” Raj told The Indian Express.Meanwhile, District Magistrate (DM) V K Singh has also formed a three-member committee to look into the incident. “The committee includes Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashok Kataria, Additional District Magistrate, City, Brijesh Singh and Additional Chief Medical Officer Dr Praveen Gautam,” DM Singh said.College principal Dr R C Gupta said an impartial investigation will be conducted and action would be taken against those found involved.Story continues below this adThe Mundali Police have registered an FIR under BNS section 106 (causing death due to negligence) after the brother of deceased, Mohit gave a complaint to the police. Talking to The Indian Express, the Circle Officer, Kithor, Pramod Kumar Singh said that the police were informed of the death after they received a memo from the hospital on Monday. “We have begun an investigation into the case,” said the CO.
