England retained their European crown on Sunday in Basel, with Arsenal Women’s stars playing pivotal roles in a tense 1-1 draw that ended in another historic shootout win. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty, sealing victory for the Lionesses over reigning world champions Spain in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final.Russo and Kelly Combine to Cancel Out Spanish OpenerSpain took the lead in the 25th minute through WSL Player of the Season 2024-25, Mariona Caldentey, who ghosted into the box to head home a cross from Ona Batlle. Caldentey, a top Gunner herself, had been dangerous from the start and gave Spain a deserved lead heading into half-time.But England, driven by resilience and boosted by key substitutions, found their response in the second half. After replacing the injured Lauren James late in the first period, Chloe Kelly played a key role once again. Her perfectly placed cross was met by Arsenal’s WSL Golden Boot Winner, Alessia Russo, who leapt to guide a header past Cata Coll and draw England level in the 57th minute.Women’s EURO 2025 Winners (Photo by Charlotte Wilson/Getty Images)Six Gunners Involved as Hampton and Kelly Seal GloryThe match went to extra time, with Sarina Wiegman introducing Arsenal’s Beth Mead and Michelle Agyemang from the bench. That brought the Gunners’ representation to six players, joining starters Leah Williamson and Russo, plus Kelly and Caldentey on the Spanish side, with the 7th Gunner, Lotte Wubben-Moy, who didn’t come off the bench.Extra time failed to separate the teams, sending the final to a penalty shootout. Mead stepped up first for England but had her retaken effort saved after a double touch. Mariona’s penalty was then denied by goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, and despite Leah Williamson also being thwarted from the spot, England edged ahead. With the scores at 3-2, it came down to Kelly, and the Arsenal forward made no mistake, blasting her shot past Coll to clinch the title for England. Williamson, Mead, Russo, Kelly and Lotte Wubben-Moy all collected their second European Championship winner’s medals. Agyemang, who scored twice earlier in the tournament, was named Young Player of the Tournament as she lifted her first senior international trophy.Opinion: Gunners at The Heart of Lionesses UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 TriumphArsenal’s influence on the final was impossible to miss, with seven players representing the club in a gripping encounter between two of the world’s top sides. How proud are we Gooners?
