‘Diabetic foot ulcers go neglected due to lack of awareness’

He made these remarks at the two-day national-level conference to tackle the rising cases of diabetes related foot complications — Surat DiaFoot Summit 2025 — which concluded in Surat on Monday.Over 115 delegates from across India and 30 expert faculty doctors took part in the event, hosted by Surat Diabetic Foot and Ulcer Clinic.“India, with one of the highest burdens of diabetes globally, is witnessing an alarming rise in diabetic foot complications, which remain a major cause of amputations, disability, and loss of productivity,” said an expert, who took part in the event.“Despite being preventable with timely care and intervention, diabetic foot ulcers and complications often go neglected due to lack of awareness and access to specialized care,” said Shah.Multiple sessions were held during the event, including ‘Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Diabetic Foot Complications’, ‘Role of Vascular Interventions, Advanced Dressings, and Reconstructive Surgery’.Case-based panel discussions involving endocrinologists, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, disease experts, and wound care specialists were also held. Additionally, live demonstrations and interactive modules on new innovations such as low-cost irrigation-debridement systems and advanced flap techniques were shown to the attendees. The summit also highlighted the urgent need for structured diabetic foot clinics across the country.“Our goal is to shift the focus from amputation to awareness and from delay to early intervention.
